Can someone please answer my question of why a motor manufacture would put out their products sprayed with tri coat paints? generally speaking their nothing but a pain in the ass. having to take out extra time to do a step down panel or spray out cards.I dont see the advantage of doing this compared to a regular base/clear job.

In my eyes the Tri stage is a tool that allows us to achieve colors and effects that would never be as vibrant as a 2 stage process. It’s really that simple.

:agree Paint color Is a marketing trick if you like the color you will buy it.

thats why they do it to make more money, think of it as an investment if you paint the turd to look nice and sell it for $2000.00 more than a basecoat job and only have 250.00 invested = more profit
    period.

Insurance companies pay us more time and give us an extra blend panel if we need it.Also it depends what paint system you are using, since we started using Autowave over two years ago I haven’t done a let down panel since and do it on the fly,tri stages are a snap. The joys of doing anywhere form 3-8 jobs a day really take a toll on your spray outs :p .

the funny thing is you won’t find tri coats on european cars. but in all honestly, after spraying a few, you’ll know how many coats to put on.

They can suck if you let them. But if your ground colour is decent and you have enough room to blend they can be fairly easy. I usually do a let down panel (or series of spray out cards with more mid coat on each progressive card). Generally, however, I find 3 midcoats usually hits the spot. Some paint manufacturers have 2 coat formulas for tri-stage that can work out well. I generally prefer the blendability and control of doing them as a tri-stage, though.

dcturcotte,I have to disagree, most time you cant tell them apart until you hit them with the sand paper. I don’t see an advantage compared to 2 stage.

I thought you could get pearl in 2 stage just not that code… :pcorn:

It’s impossible to have a 2 stage white pearl. Any pearl or mica added to white gets covered by the white toner and doesn’t show. You can add metallic to white and it just turns it gray.

Usually on reds and blue 3 stages they are made a tri coat for appearance and coverage reasons. They wil be more deep and brilliant when sprayed like a candy would.

pearl toners are im just about every 2 stage metallic formula. Doesnt make it a 2 stage formula for a tri-coat though just cause it has some pearl in it

yep, even the new exirllic pearls are in them too.
i had fun today, had to paint two covers this morning and both were tri coats. honda white pearl and gm’s red tri.

timbo what your thinkin about is when a color gets old enough you can get 2k formula in place of the 3k forumla. like fords e9
