Ppg is Supoosedly to be come ing out with a binder to help with the enviro drying faster on high humid days. But we don’t use a Gardner in any our base’s, wb or solvent.
But like the op, I had the same problem with tape residue being left behind on the color, or the fine line doesn’t want to stick to well to the base. But I’ve only had to do a few two tones, but cause of the few issues I use solvent for the two toneing process.
July 7, 2012 at 7:47 am #37603We switched to autowave this week, the rep says to try using hardner in the base in a situation like I explained here. I havent tried it yet. Can I clean over it with wax and grease remover without removing some of the color? providing sufficient dry time. Also, is there truth in adhesion problems if using a solvent based intermix clear over the wb? and if so, would adding hardner to the solvent based intermix clear help? I use ppg dbc500
July 7, 2012 at 11:47 pm #37607Good lord don’t wipe it with wax and grease remover :wak Adding hardener to autowave will increase flash and tape times,2.5% will make it spray decent but blending can still be tricky.Personally I wouldn’t use it….

Why would you NEED to degrease base coat?
If you can get DBC500, why not just do the whole job in PPG/solvent base?
Does PPG say you can add hardener to the DBC500?
Why not just clear the thing, sand it, and move onto the next step without worries?
July 21, 2012 at 7:54 am #37675wax and grease remover is the only way to get the tape glue off and some of the glue was right up against the edge of the wb.
I’d use all solvent base colors, but our shop switched to all wb and the dbc 500 is mine that I use occasionally to protect airbrush art. And yes I can add a little hardner to the dbc 500, the same hardner thats used in the final clear.

Have you tried dulling the tape before putting it onto the panel? I find this helps. I personally don’t like to wipe waterborne basecoats down with anything other then a tack cloth
