    Hi everyone.

I need to replace the front bumper of my 2002 BMW 530i. I cannot find a decent used one around here, and the new OEM is around $800 after tax (with my membership discount!) so that is not an option.

I had a local bodyshop order a new aftermarket bumper, I went and checked it out and it was a TYG (Tong Yang Group) bumper.
I know it will not line up perfectly 10/10 like an OEM bumer would, but how is the fitment on this? How would you rate it out of 10?

Initially I thought they were going to order TYC, but it turned out to be TYG… same company? What is the difference? Anything better out there?

    Thanks.

Nothing is like an OEM replacement part, sure you can make an aftermarket work but they can be a pain, they are either too big or too small. If you go the aftermatrket route test fit it before you paint it and hope for the best.If it was mine I would hold out for a good original or buy new.

Is the bumper CAPA certified? I personally have had great success with TYG CAPA certified bumpers. I would rate most at 7 or 8 out of 10.

Yes TYG and TYC are the same manufacturer.

These guys pretty well summed it up. I find the A/M parts to be hit or miss. Some work well, others are pure garbage. I haven’t noticed a major difference between the different brands.

I’ve never put aftermarket parts on a BMW, only ever OEM, so definitely test fit it…

    Thanks for reply everyone.

I am in Canada, so not sure if we have this whole CAPA deal up here.

The car is a facelift version of the E39, only produced 2001-2003 so its a bit hard finding a decent used one, especially around here.
I totally agree that OEM is the best way, it always is… I don’t mind the bumper not lining with fender perfectly,as long as there are no ridiculous gaps etc…

Initially I was going to get the OEM bumper thinking it would be around $500 or so, but its $823 from the local dealer (before tax), $625 from a dealer in Toronto that offers discount to forum members, plus tax and shipping it would be well over $750 after tax and shipping.
I always get the best stuff for my car, but I think 750 for just the bumper and no moldings is ridiculous. I can get the M5 replica bumper from this company: http://www.umnitza.com/e39-5series-m5-polypropylene-bumper-front-p-1154.html

Lots of good reviews and raves, best bang for the buck bumper, but I think the facelift version looks better. Lots of people go the M5 bumper route.

I think the first one (facelift) makes the car look more “elegant”.

The only way I would entertain the idea of using an aftermarket cover on a beemer is if my supplier would let me return it if it didn’t fit.Honestly you could get a dead cat huge gap and might not even line up remotely close. For asian cars the aftermarket is not bad,for european cars the parts are awful in my experience.

    Or there is the alternate…

I just checked to see about a re manufactured one for your BMW. Retail is $590. If you aren’t familiar with Reman bumpers, they are OEM bumpers that have been damaged, then repaired and primed (ready for paint). They tend to be better than aftermarket (but of course cheaper than OEM). And since they are technically and OEM bumper, fitting them is a non-issue.

The only down side is you don’t know how badly damaged it was before/how well it was repaired. Being a shop, we are able to check everything out and return parts that aren’t up to our standard, at least.

Thanks for reply everyone. Even the reconditioned bumper seems to be hit on miss.

I got the bumper from the bodyshop today to test fit it. I am actually surprised, it fits way better that I expected.
I know its not exactly perfect OEM fitment, but for the fraction of the cost, I can’t complain. I did not even touch the bumper adjuster so playing with it might make it even better.

I’ll let you be the judge:

Looks decent. May be an idea to fit the trim pieces as well and make sure they fit in there properly too

    May 19, 2012 at 6:34 am #36953

I did test the fog lights, and the lower trims, they all fit fine.
I did not test the upper trims (moldings) since I had given them to the bodyshop the prior day.
