We are painting a 09 Kia Borrego rear bumper cover Lower. Its a silver paint code WF. The original paint is an uncleared base. We spray Cromax Pro. Anyone had experience with this procedure before with water based? Wondering if we just activate the base and spray.

I’m not familiar with car but are you sure it’s not done with matt/flat clear? I can’t see them just leaving a bumper in base

If you apply the basecoat without a matte clear or something it won’t have very good UV protection and will likely chalk up/fade fairly quick. I don’t know what is on it from factory but it’s always been against manufacturers recommendations to leave basecoat uncleared where exposed to sunlight.

Any ideas of how to mach the gloss level of an uncleared base. but still maintaining the uv protection?

    A matte or semi-gloss clearcoat.

It likely was sprayed with a matte SS paint

Seen similar on other Kias and Hyundais. Ultra thin paint on plastics that looks great when new but fails very quickly. It fries up real bad if even go near it with anything that contains solvent. The new ones don’t have it, thankfully.

You have to clear all basecoat as it will not stand up to UV exposure very long at all. Ding is right it’s just a SS matte color, nothing special.

Just use a matte clear over the base and call it done.

Thanks for all the feedback guys. What does the SS stand for?

Not fully on topic, but just as I left my last job Debeer were introducing an additive for their water base so it could be used un-cleared on under hood areas and the like.

Sherwin AWX has an activator also, but not really recommended for exterior use mainly under bonnet and interior areas.
I know if you left uncleared waterborne, the rain and car washing will eventually dissolve it away. Have seen several cases of waterborne washing away from stonechip areas, a few from sikkens but for some reason a fair few from de beer.
Products using pure de ionised water instead of a waterborne reducer also seem to be a little more prone to weathering if exposed.

I know we’re heading off topic but that is interesting, Rep. I haven’t used waterborne but always thought that it was like water based house paint in that once it had dried it was no longer water soluble. What you’re saying is that is not the case but that it can, eventually, be washed away.
