Good morning all!
I’m always watching videos on youtube of american shops and it amazes me the differences in what you guys can do compared to us,,and i don’t mean workmanship but the shop set ups and work volumes/types you undertake. What i mean is i often see a very big shop with just a couple of guys in it full of restorations and huge jobs?
These sort of jobs in the UK are very rarely profitable?I doubt you’d last 12 months here in a shop like that…You are always using quality materials and have huge paint booths and great equipment..Which here cost a fortune…
I read an article on the top ten resession proof business in US and body shops were in it?
Which types of shops are the most profitable???
So what i’m asking is the trade really that much better in the US because here in the UK its a real struggle at the moment with shops closing up all over the place?
Or are you guys having the same struggles as us?Are big shops cheaper to rent, cars worth more or is it peoples willingness to spend on there cars??
I would love to get your thoughts on this from the US and even anyone in the UK??

February 25, 2014 at 10:03 am #45979I live in the Northern California area and in this area the Insurance collision business is where the big shops are located, dont get me wrong, there are some big restoration jobs, however insurance jobs are the busiest around here.
In my opinion reputation is king, and no matter what you do, resto or insurance if you develop a great reputaion you can be profitable anywhere. Money management falls in a close second to me.

I would hardly consider body shops in the US recession proof, just since I have entered the industry I have seen a fall off in the volume of work, and the times insurance company’s are willing to pay. Insurance company’s make the industry tough, It’s the trade off we make with DRPS. They keep work coming in, but try to make cuts everywhere they can.
