After yesterday’s paint fiasco got solved, I thought I’d start a thread on what I’m doing to my car to get it ready for another winter.

It was very warm in Southern Alberta today so I decided to sandblast the fenders and get them in some epoxy primer. I’ve never used the pressure blaster so this was a learning experience. I started by putting down a single tarp (I’m an optimist  ) and lining every thing up that I needed.

I bought some copper slag blasting media – this turned out to be a mistake. Anyway, I fiddled around with the various ball valves and managed to turn this…

    into…

First try – changed to a less coarse blast media (worked better – still got everywhere!).

    Done.

I then treated the panels to some Metal Ready (they rust very quickly) – and got ready to shoot. I didn’t bother feathering the paint out – I’ve got filling and some more masaging to do still. This is just a “get it covered” coat for the front and I’m going to shoot the back sides with whatever I’ve got after I seam seal it – then undercoat.

Here we are almost ready to shoot – still have to clear some stuff out of the way and put up the final drape.

    Here they are done.

Now to get some paint on them tomorrow and get them undercoated.

I had a buddy over today and we got a bunch of work done on this project. The car is actually remarkably solid underneath and the rust is limited to rear 1/4 lower as usual with the exception of the rust around the windshield which is pretty bad. We met in the AM and developed a game plan and pulled all the trim off the car. I then took it to the car wash for a good going over and a wash with Comet to clean off the wax and other contaminants.

The rear 1/4 areas are not bad and the inner parts are solid. The hack that did the bondo work actually used a reinforcing mesh to fill the hole – I was “impressed”…at least he wasn’t trying to hide his work.

The replacement panels…hmmm, these need some shrinking.
    [img]http://www.calgaryvolvoclub.com/gallery/d/18548-2/HPIM1341.JPG[/img]

    Ah, that’s better (other side).
    [img]http://www.calgaryvolvoclub.com/gallery/d/18551-2/HPIM1342.JPG[/img]

End of the day – no more front end (everything was bagged and tagged).
    [img]http://www.calgaryvolvoclub.com/gallery/d/18560-2/HPIM1349.JPG[/img]

    No more rear end.
    [img]http://www.calgaryvolvoclub.com/gallery/d/18563-2/HPIM1350.JPG[/img]

There are still some parts to strip off the car and put away, then I’ve got to get the rear end welded up, a little sandblasting.

No time lines yet, but we’ll just keep on plugging.

Looking good Canuck! Didn’t realize you were an Alberta fella too Jayson. You guys are lucky to have the Oilers to cheer for over there, the Leafs have embarrased the whole province with there performance so far…..although they did beat Detroit last night….

Here’s today’s progress. The wind was howling, so welding outside was a challenge. First up I had to rebuild the inner fender and tire well. Here’s the finished product.
    [img]http://www.calgaryvolvoclub.com/gallery/d/18569-2/HPIM1352.JPG[/img]

Then the replacement outer panel was fitted.

Welded all the way around. I’ll grind down the welds etc when I pull the car into the shop – it’s too cold out to worry about it for now.

Ah, the Oilers…good to see Penner is coming around. Should have the other side done Friday night or Saturday then on to blasting the rest of the rust and getting it in epoxy while I do the rest of the bodywork. So much work…

I sort of forgot that I started this tread…Well, today we got colour and clear on the car. I’ve got a few dust issues (have to turn my furnace off or get a filter in front of it). So I’ve got some wet sanding to do tomorrow then hit it with another coat of clear, but basically I’m done painting the car. Wow, what a hard pull to make it to this point.

I’ll quit typing now and let you see the pictures.

I’m pretty happy – the finish (where I didn’t manage to screw up and run it – long story with a stupid in line water trap…) is great. I’m sure it isn’t as nice as what you guys produce, but with a little polishing, it will come out just fine.

I spent a few more hours sanding the car with 1000 wet/dry. I had tried a DeVilbiss desicant snake for the first time…it was killing the air volume I had and was making spraying really difficult as it was so stiff. This left me with a couple of runs to deal with – live and learn. Go with what you know works. I picked up another quart of clear and after sanding the car I shot it again. One coat on everything, two on the hood.

The Iwata was fine with a cheapo orange filter. I dropped the pressure down to 20 psi, then shot the clear. Went on like glass – I now have the feel for this gun. There is still some dust in the finish, but nothing that a little polishing can’t pick up.

Anyway, for those that were wondering what is up in my garage rafters, I took these shots.

So a little polishing and this car is ready to put back together.

    Thanks Guys.
