Got a question, the last 3 cars that I did with this code wa301n, when I sanded my blend panels my clear dust came up red, like the clear was tinted. Never any issue with color match or blends or anything but I didnt know if GM tinted the clear with this color or what the deal is with it, anyone got any ideas? Got a Vette that I am spraying with that in the morning and

wa301n or 80 u is a tri stage and the clear is actually tinted. almost like a 4 stage.I have done a Ford recently too with the code U6 candy red.

Yup, looks like Ford forgot the lesson from E9.

U6 (candy red, tinted clear) and Z9 (candy blue tinted clear). Both are candied and both are blotchy from the factory.

NQ the yellow three stage I have yet to get the pleasure of. Hopefully it’s ugly enough where they won’t sell many. :lol1

I am spraying Sikkens solvent and when I looked it up it only shows it as being a normal base clear. Did a sprayout today when I jambed out the hood and the color looked good, but it didnt have the pop or depth that a tri stage would have, so what do I need to do, add some base to my clear? I might call the help desk in the morning and see what they say as well. The last two jobs in the shop were the same color but they were blended out as normal and looked fine, didnt tint the clear or anything.

I wouldnt put any base in your clear. It may be a tri coat. I have sanded alot of those colors and they do come off red. Some paint mfgs may do it in a tri but sikkens may have it close enough with a two coat.

Wa301n red jewel pearl coat matches fantastic in sikkens autowave, like everyone else has said it is just a base clear system.I have also butt matched it many times,no worries chuck 😉

I have found almost none of the 2 stage formulas that look like 3 stages have the pop that your talking about. They seem to blend fine and look good outside but it can be deceiving when matching sprayouts.

i dont see a difference between OEM 2 stage and 3 stage. Sikkens using 2 stage paint to match 3 stage proves my point. 3 stages are more trouble than their worth.

I completely disagree, there is a big difference in appearance. To be honest I always used the 3 stage formula as it matched better and not much more work. You can make the 2 stage fly and they look decent outside but it does not look the same. They lack the pop like a candy would have.

A 3 stage red in water is cake.

Ok. example,Ford Motor company codes, G2 two stage and U6 tri-coat. Put the two together and tell me the difference in appearance. Tri coats are a breeze yes, but for the little WOW you get its no better than a 2 stage.

One thing I would like to add is sikkens only has a regular base formulas for some colors that are tri-stage in other companies. They don’t offer a cheater formula for for tri stages,a couple of colors for example are nissan b17,chrysler pel and a few others that I can’t think of.I don’t know how you would do a pearl white in regular base, white kills all metallics and pearls,so to get the effect you want you would have to use a huge amount just to get a slight effect….sorry can’t see how that would work.

yes white would be an exception.IMO the two stage codes UH and Uj have as much or more WOW with their high metallic content than most of the 3 stage pearls i have seen.

Painted the vette today, everything blended out great and hopefully the peel will look fairly close to the rest of the car. I painted everything apart so I will have to see what it all looks like tomorrow when it gets put back together. I will try to see if I can figure out how to post pictures of it, other than the normal nubs that have to be taken care of I think that all is well.
Thanks for all the advice/comments. I brag on this site all the time when guys at work ask where I learned something new. 2 1/2 years ago I walked into this job as the new wash boy and now I get to paint all day. Cant think of anything else that I would rather do.

    Thanks
