I am getting ready to make the switch. Which brand do you prefer and why? I currently sprat DuPont Chromapremier. anyone have any thoughts on having a Low VOC solvent system for fleet and older cars and a WB system for high-end jobs? Thanks!
March 18, 2012 at 9:38 pm #36353It really depends on what kind of jobber you have in your area with great service. Some brands are better than others but you should look for colormatch, ease of use etc.I would try some demos of different products that are in your area instead of putting in a system and jumping in head first.
Nothing wrong with having another system for fleet work and old beaters,we do the same thing at our shop.March 18, 2012 at 11:37 pm #36355I added lesonal waterbased about a year ago and it definitely comes in handy when doing small repairs and any kind of gold/beige/silver blending. pretty effortlessly. downsides… solid colors seem to want to pull away on sharp body lines sometimes.. have to dust them in. finer prep, doesn’t build much so more nibbing when you get the occasional dust chunk. i have been very happy with lesonal solvent that i added the water and will continue to use both. definitely give it a try before hand… it’s a trip

March 19, 2012 at 1:24 am #36361
IMO the two that seem to be leading the pack are PPG with the Envirobase/Nexa aquabase and ( i hate to say this) Akzo Nobel with Sikkens Autowave.
I know I keep banging on about it, but I changed from NEXA to DeBeer 900 a couple of years ago, and love it. They’d have to pay me to swap back!
I’m not quite as keen on the clear, but then we went from the top line NEXA clear to an “entry level” DeBeer one to save money, so it’s apples and oranges.

:woohoo: :rofl :roflMarch 19, 2012 at 4:18 am #36370I plan on looking at all brands before I choose one. I have a year (July 2013) before it goes mandatory, but I would like to be converted by years end so that I can work the bugs out. I have had all of the paint companies calling me. I don’t really want to sign another contract, but if I switch from DuPont I am going to have huge bill to pay for all of my open tints from my consignment. I guess I am going to spray all brands and decide what works best for us.
Here is another question…I am going to put in a new booth. I currently have an old cross draft with no heat… Should I dig a basement and put in downdraft, or do a semi with no basement?
This booth by americure is intriguing …. Check out the blowers in the ceiling. Thoughts?

Accudraft has there own corner set up that runs off a turbine so it doesnt use the shop air (wont strain the compressor). and they just introduced a setup where you choose which units are blowing air so all 4 arent going at once if you dont need them. Global Finishing Systems has a similar setup to that americure one you posted.

:rofl :rofl :rofl :rofl :roflMarch 19, 2012 at 5:10 am #36375Jobbers have offered to pay for my upgrades, but i would have to sign a contract to spend $360-600k with them….sell my soul or just finance it and be able to throw them out if I am unhappy?
March 19, 2012 at 6:41 am #36378I been spraying sikkens autowave for over 2 yrs and we have no problems. It just took trial and error on my part to get up to speed with it. We have two downdrafts with 3 ceiling fans in each booth and hand held airmovers on portable stands. Celing fans are great !!! Clean airflow is a must for production (getting the autowave paint to dry), areas down low, below moldings or rockers the hand held air movers do the job nicely for us. Good Luck
