I just wanted to see what the opinions are like on this stuff. I seem to remember a few OEM’s recommending to use it and some not but not really my area of expertise. What are your thoughts?

I’ve always used it on any sort of lap joint. I figure it helps more than it hurts.

I have used the Copper Color wedable primer by SEM. I figure it couldn’t hurt like mentioned above, especially in areas where you can’t get to the backside to treat after the spot repair.

I use 3M weld thru primer for the same reasons above.. Cant hurt and when you cant get to the backside of the weld, at least it has some protection vs nothing but sanded bare metal that you know is going to rust

I use it on bare metal spots created by removing panels. New parts are left alone and i just burn thru the factory primer- ecoat. No sense in grinding entire flanges, the least amount of bare metal the better in regards to corrosion resistance. An aresol of primer lasts me about a year welding panels on almost daily. Actually i use spies redbrown not zinc because it can be top coated unlike the zinc. When done welding before sending to paint i use the wand with epoxy and drench inside rockers and such. After paint and before assembly i use regular rust proof with another wand gun, we have lots of road salt around here so a guy needs to be diligent in regards to corrosion protection. We get paid for doing it to. 😉

Did anybody have problems with the weldable primer catching on fire while welding? It would flare up and then put itself out. Usually I would blow on the tack weld and it would quickly go out. Maybe it was the Epoxy primer around the weldable primer I laid down behind the rocker panel before I tacked it in.
