Alright thanks guys. I ended up using the sandpaper and it worked out pretty well.

I just had another question: I asked my local paint supplier if he could give me a smaller amount of wax & grease remover instead of buying the usual 1 gallon (I think?) jugs. He gave me a quart instead which is fine.

The thing is that the stuff he gave me smells very similar to the “solvent” (does not say wax & grease remover, just solvent) I have…can this be used as a wax & grease remover? I’m guessing it can since he gave me it when I asked for wax & grease remover, but I just want to double check before it causes me lifting issues.

    Thanks,
    Elliott

I don’t know what he gave you. Should have some sort of label. Its technically illegal to sell that sort of stuff with out proper labeling/WHMIS info on the can.

Smell alone is not really a good indication. Most solvent products are a blend of several different types of solvents, so often different products can smell similar but be very different.

In theory, you can clean a panel with just about any solvent, but you want to be cleaning with something that is fairly aggressive to lift contaminants but relatively fast to flash off and not eat into your substrate.

Thanks Ben. Yeah there is no label on the stuff he gave me…anyway I guess I won’t use it just in case. There is a distinct smell to the PPG wax & grease remover that I have, and it does not smell like it at all…

I mean, can any sort of “solvent” cleaner be used to de-grease/wax a panel if it is wiped off (like they should be)?

    Thanks again,
    Elliott

Why not give the store a call today and ask them what it was that they sold you. Almost every brand of wax and grease remover I’ve used has smelled a little bit different.

It was probably a final wipe solvent he gave you. I use it all the time, i like that it evaporates faster than wax and grease remover. Just be sure to wash the panel well and follow with a good wipe with another fresh towel and you will be fine.

Painting the front of the car tomorrow (sans bumper…will leave for another time). Just working out some last minute bugs like one of the rub strips being broken…fixing that as we speak.

Well, painted it today…color match isn’t great on one side of the car…I think it’s because one side of the car was painted previously by a P.O. and the other side wasn’t…
