hey hows it going I just joined up and the site is awesome, tons of info. I want to get back into paint and body and need to get some equipment that doesnt suck like my old stuff. Im wondering what kind of guns the pros use in there booths. Ive done some painting acouple years ago and had pretty terrible results simply because I used lousy paint and a cheap gun. I plan on never doing that again. im looking into a buying a devilbiss GTI for base and a Plus for clear. the price is good on both of these but as I stated before price isnt whats realy imprtant here.one of my biggest questions is also if yall like HVLP or compliant air caps. so what do yall sugest?
:welc i think if your a devillbiss guy or they are within your price range then you should look into a Tekna gun. i use one everyday for both base or clear and its a fantastic gun. you can purchase a compliant air cap and the hvlp cap but in my opinion the compliant air cap is the best way to go and the most universal. they are also running a 2 gun special on the Tekna at the moment for a killer price.

February 4, 2011 at 4:40 am #28060Love my SATA 3000 HVLP 1.3 Digital for base and clear. Have used Devilbiss guns prior to using my Sata and I have to say, I like the Sata better. I guess it all depends on the user and their style of painting. Just my opinion, buy the best gun that is within your budget.
Basically like everyone else has said. It doesn’t matter who you talk to everyone is going to have a different opinion. Whatever you choose to buy, you get what you pay for. I have a GTi, 2 Sata 3000 WSB’s, and a Sata 3000 RP. All of them are excellent guns. I have never sprayed a Iwata but I hear nothing but good things about them. When I was in school and starting out all I used was my GTi and I used that for everything from sealer to clear and it worked great. Each gun is going to have its pros and cons you just have to play with it and get it dialed in.

I thought you were a Harbour Freight kind of guy…but that was only an assumption I made based on your photos :rofl
Seriously though, gun technology has changed some over the years. The most common guns today are:
-Sata (3000 and now the new 4000) in RP and HVLP
-Iwata has the Supernove and the 400 series (also in Compliant and HVLP formats)
-Devilbiss has the Tekna (which has interchangeable aircaps to make it compliant or HVLP). I like this gun, but it doesn’t seem to be as popular/common as the above 2The GTi and the Plus are great guns, but both are dated by today’s standards. You can get great results with them, however.
thanks for all the replies guys, its really helpful. I have noticed that alot of yall tend to favor the Sata RP and I have looked into it. if yall say thats the best all around gun im cool with spending the extra money to pick one up. same with the Tekna and Iwata’s yall mentioned. do yall usually use a different gun for base and clear or, since they usually can be shot with the same tip, just stick to one gun that your most comforatable with?
February 4, 2011 at 10:14 am #28086I went LV iwata due to my pansy compressor, and I love it, but as some on here will tell you it’s slower than molasses in january. If i had a real comp and a real booth I’d probably have an HVLP Sata for at clear, or try to get a compliant iwata from europe

Different gun…that depends. Lots of us are using waterborne, so we have a different gun for base than clear. Shooting solvent base, you can use the gun for your clear, indeed. Again, this is preference. Some people are happy to spray certain base with the same setup, others prefer not. Depends on the gun, setup, the particular base you are spraying and your technique/preference.
February 5, 2011 at 5:22 pm #28125I use a Devilbiss GTi Pro 1.3 with a T1 air cap for base, and a Sata 3000 RP 1.3 digital for clear.
I actually have two GTi Pro’s (marked Base and Clear). I mostly use the GTi Pro Clear gun for spraying WOW primer, but on smaller clear jobs, I still like using the Devilbiss over my Sata.
hold it rite there, i dont believe ive heard any one mention the accuspray line. i used to be a sata guy, then found my self stuck using an develbiss gti, i mean the gti is a great gun if you like pounding on material,( turned the gti turd into my sealer gun) i think shes starting to die though. and as for the plus for clear its not a bad option but again brings the point of pounding on more material than i like to. bot back to the gem of this reply. the accuspray isaac, i picked this gun up for around 450 bucks when my basf rep learned i was in the market for a new gun, one of my favorite qualities about this gun is i can change the needle just by unscrewing in while i leave the spring and tension nob in place, why do i like this? because for minimal cost i have a bs/cc gun all in one, by just changing caps and yes im aware the tekna can do the same but if you ask me this gun is no different from the gti, just a new name so sata guys who for some reason like to pay for a name will give it a try(exact words from the develbiss sales person who pitched me the gun) this loser actually tried showing me its “great” clear coat capabilities on the masking of a car i had half masked for a tiny prime, i about back handed this guy as our detailer would have me for such negligence, but the flashy new name doesn’t make up for poor quality. the iwata isn’t a bad gun either, im actually thinking of picking up the w400 for my clear coat application. so if you want sata performance for the tekna price go with the isaac or at least demo it. i spray this gun at around 17psi, and you can say good bye to tiger stripes with the isaac as well.
and sorry to all the loyal develbiss fans i just havent had much luck with this brand or its answer to sata, and as for the sata fans i say sorry as well,
TRY THE ISAAC
February 5, 2011 at 9:30 pm #28135isaac sprays base ok. doesnt spray clear worth a crap. and its slow as molasses. No way in hell it even comes close to a sata
