Hello, just wondering what people use for custom work. Hok,ppg, dupont. Also which products. Thank you.

I’ve seen a lot of nice jobs done by mixing whatever off of the standard mixing banks. You can get some real nice colours when you start playing around with it.

At a previous shop, we did a Custom job on a Dodge Ram using PPGs vibrance line. I did some of the body work, but someone else painted it.

Really, unless you are looking for a special effect colour (and therefore willing to spend the $$$) it is probably better to stick with what you have/know.

:agree I just mix stuff off the rack and I have most of the Vibrance toners that Ben mentioned but these can get very expensive…. no doubt, One 4oz bottle of VM4102 Emberglo Pearl cost $885

Believe it or not HOK is fairly inexpensive compared to PPG Vibrance line, it all depends on the color and effect you are looking for.

I’ve used numerous things. Solvent based lines RM – carrizma, Sherwin William – planet color, random toners and mixed off a mixing bank, dyes in clearcoats. Some success with airbrushing waterbased: RM – Onyx HD, Auto Color….I’ve even sprayed spray bombs into a small container and fed them into my airbrush but be careful on how you use those they can bite you if your not careful in your layering. just sprayed sherman williams planet color ; WaterBorne Candy at school this past week…… i was impressed but super high in price. i have ppg vibrance concentrates and use cumberlands carrier/blending clear so it helps with the cost. I am HOK and PPG certified and have used plenty of HOK
lately if i am spraying solids i have been using waterborne base coats because the yellows, reds, blues, and greens have a stronger color pops.

I always used PPG for candies and metalflakes, stocked up on dbc500 and candy toners before they were discontinued, down to enough dbc to do a bike maybe, woukld like to know of other alternatives, this “sherwill-wrinkle”planet color sounds interesting…..

i only do custom work. mostly use rm with spi clears and primers. occasionaly i will use hok. its good but i dont like it as much as rm. you can mix matches to all the hok colors right off the rack.
