I will have the option to switch paint from cromax to either PPG Envirobase or Sikkens Autowave and would like feed back on both from painters who have used it a while all i really know about them is they are a lot easier to use then cromax and have better color match
I’ve used both systems. You can’t go wrong either way. Personally, I liked the primers and clear better in Sikkens. The colour matches are probably a little better with Sikkens, and I liked the metallic toners better as well.
PPG’s plastic toner containers seemed better to me, the sealer lays nice and flat and is fast. I liked the black toner better as well.
I would consider pricing and the service you will get from the suppliers
In my area PPG dominates. its a great product and has good color strength and great color match.
as far as sikkens, we had a shop calling us that used it any time he hit oranges and yellows, apparently they are weak and tough to achieve hiding. This shop had the sikkens system for about a year after he kicked basf out, then ended up kicking sikkens out due to the poor hiding and finally settled on a dupont system.
Cromax is a different animal, its plus is that it dries crisp and can be sanded easily. whereas the PPG has a flexible texture to it and is difficult to sand out if you need to. I can’t comment on sikkens on this issue.
I can say that a few years ago sikkens dominated here with the solvent systems, but now there is very little of it left, its all PPG and dupont.
What I like about PPG is how flat it dries. There is virtually NO texture to the dried finish when your finished basing, which makes for a nice smooth clearcoat finish. This is also great for blending.
I would have to agree with Ben on the service aspect more than anything.. but I would lean to PPG if possible, I have never heard of one being removed for another brand for performance issues.
also up here PPG is less costly to use compared to sikkens and dupont.
thanks guys yea the jobber that sales PPG is the most popular in my area and when I did use them at my last job they had some of the best service and if i need help now at the job I’m at they will be there even though i dont use there paint anymore and the jobber that sales sikkens now has only been open for a little over a year now and dont know much about them or there techs
January 18, 2013 at 7:44 am #40423I have been using autowave for 4 years and really don’t have any complaints.Yellows and reds cover a white sealer fine and all metallics are 2 coats plus a drop, pretty decent IMO.Color match is also excellent.
If you can why don’t you set up some demos of each system and then you can get a feel for each product before you commit.I’ve used PPG envirobase for 3 years …. It’s a great system, colors match is great , application is user friendly, the computer system is really easy to use. Their primers and sealers are stupendous. Out here in California a lot of shops use PPG and Sikkens. ……..cromax oh boy, I been spraying cromax for 2 years …. It’s a different product, not user friendly, you have to tint 87% of colors, color chips don’t match what you mix, but its Fast once you get the hang of it, and solid colors match dead on with the camera.
yea solids do match good but thats really it and I’m not a big fan of only being able to relay on the camera and not something i can see with my own eyes like the chips cause they suck but I’ve got my own spray outs going and they dont even come close to the chips but oh well got to spray what the boss tells me till we start demos
