Well, I have been at this shop for about 8 months. It pays well and my bosses are ok. But I just don’t fit in with the other guys in the shop. I get along with most everyone, but in this shop I just can’t seem to “click” with the others. I don’t care to be everyone’s friend, but I am getting tired of the lack of team work/attitude/bad mouthing.
I don’t want to quit because the money is good and the company has been good to me…but I know when a square peg doesn’t fit in a round hole.
I may have on offer at another dealer a little further away. Pay should be about the same. I hate to leave after such a short time and for such a stupid reason, but I am not comfortable nor enjoying work anymore. Christmas isn’t the best time to switch jobs either, but thankfully I have some possible alternatives.
Tough decision…any thoughts?
Yes i know what you mean ben i left my other last work place about a month ago because of the managment was like you wasnt happy there anymore was there for about 5 years.. new place im at is good grate bunch of guys no bitching and moaning.. I put it this way (a 40 hour week for me any way)is a long time to spend with people you dont get along with it wears down on ya in the end..
I would have a look at the other dealearship if i were you gotta be happy were you are thats half the battle 😉
December 5, 2010 at 3:23 am #25859I just left the resto shop I was at to try my hand at collision work. Resto shop was 58 miles from home, collision shop is 3 miles.
I don’t feel bad at all about leaving after 9 months of being there. Still trying to find my way after the paper mill I worked at for the past 15 years was shut down putting me and 1,100 of my coworkers out on the street. Nice to be back home.
Gotta look out for #1, while trying not to step in #2.
December 5, 2010 at 4:31 am #25864I think everyone has been in that position before but IMO dealerships and flatrate shops are all the same. The only thing people care about is how many hrs they are going to make and how to cut corners, they don’t give a fuk about you and I have seen guys who will not help you hang a hood unless they get .5hr from the job you are working on.Also 8months is not very long at a shop and you don’t want to get labelled as a “mover from shop to shop”I would sugest finding a big independant or smaller that pays straight time with a bonus, you will have better team work and morale. Also sit down with your managers and tell them how you feel, you will be suprised at what might happen,a change for the better. The shop I am at now I gave my notice 3 years ago,I was tired of all the BS,they gave me a big fat raise and quite a few other bonuses to keep me,also morale changed for the better, jumping ship is not the best answer sometimes.Goodluck 😉
December 5, 2010 at 4:32 am #25865there’s a body shop here that would hire you. got a green card? :rock

I agree with Jay don’t cut ties just yet.
If you really like the management talk to them and let them know how you feel but not in a I’m gonna leave now attitude.
Maybe they can change the attitude of others but if they can’t… remember there ain’t no perfect job or you really wouldn’t be working…
When you love what you do you will never work another day in your life.
Forget the jerks and backbiters Ben and show all that you are excellent not in word but by deed.
Don’t let the other monkies drag you down. 😉Attachments:December 5, 2010 at 9:36 am #25881I have been at the same dealership shop for the last 10yrs. Im the only origonal guy on staff. Over the years management and techs have come and gone. There are many days that I feel like Im the odd man out. Im the only person on staff that wasnt hired by our fixed ops director that also acts as a manager. I sometimes feel like Im not as valued by him since I wasnt hired by him. Its tough, I know how you feel.
Ben I would like to respond in a couple ways. First, even though I don’t do auto body work fool time, any employment that does not please you is going to show in the work you do. You attitude will show in the work and you seem to be a quality conscious kind of guy (from reading your post on this site). So, you have to do what puts Ben in a good place, money is not necessarily always a determinant of the best employment. so, do you!!!
Second, and last, personally, I have made such a move twice in my career as an engineer. Neither of the positions were positions a normal person would just walk away from financially, but I did it twice with no job waiting for me. My peace of mind is more important to my family and my health than any amount of money. I don’t know one person who ever quit a job because of the job duties, every person I know quit because of people, that means what’s happening to you is very normal.
I wish you the best in whatever decision you make and most of all I wish you peace.

hey ben i would hang in there just for a few more;) 😉 😉 trust me been there done that but just doit for a bit more:chairDecember 6, 2010 at 11:27 am #25908I have come to believe that restraint is a very valuable trait in the workplace. I’d stick with it as long as you can stand it, and then some. until another job comes along that actually can pay well and give better work environment, hang in there. I’ve had a couple of crappy jobs, but let’s face it; in reality, most jobs suck.
I, too, wish you the best.
