Well, we were discussing in another thread about flat rate refinishing hours and everyone posted whether they were prepping their own jobs or not.
So I just wanted to see how everyone divides the work in their shops.
So to start…
Everyone in my shop is flat rate. The bodymen do all the R&I and R&R as well as the body work. Large mechanical jobs go to the mechanics and most glass is done by a glass company. I do all the A/C evac. and recharge since no one else likes to do it. Bodymen finish the repair in 180 (give or take, depending on the bodyman) and feather the paint edge with 180. Then it is off to the painter (no preppers in the shop). The painter will finish feathering the paint edge, prime and block. The painter also preps all the panels, masks, wipes, sprays and removes masking paper. Bodymen reassemble and then off to the wash bay. Polishing due to the collision (like headlamps or minor paint scrapes) are done by either the bodymen or painter. Paint defects (dust nibs, runs etc) are taken care of by the painter.
When I worked at the Ford dealer it was basically the same. When I have worked hourly I did it all (prep, body, paint, mechanical and glass)
So how about the rest of you guys?
well, since i work alone i basically do everything you can possibly think of. everything from estimating to parts and material shopping, heavy mechanical to heavy collision, prepping, painting, detailing and the one who takes all the pride or beef from customers. lol. i avg about 4 cars a week if im busy enough. the only thing i hate doing and subcontract is windshields.
November 25, 2010 at 9:39 am #25546Everyone in our shop is on flat rate. We have 2 bodymen and two painters. I am a painter and I do all the prep, prime, masking, spraying and buffing. The body guys tear down, repair, frame, glass, reassembly. They get more per hour than us painters. :chair
November 25, 2010 at 5:33 pm #25547I’m in the same boat Mocoke, 1 man operation, but can handle most everything. I only sub out windshields, alignments and tires. Half the time the glass guys screw that up too, so I think from now on I’ll be doing that too.
