So I’ve taken over the paint role, and up to this point used the old painter’s charcoal mask. Today boss finally got me a new one but I asked him if he would chip in just $100 towards me getting a hobby air hood supplied air respirator. I would pay the other $300 out of my own pocket. It is not NIOSH approved but nor is the charcoal mask. Anyhow, he said he would “think about it” but that sounds like no. So I will ask him again after lunch and if he says no I will tell him he has to find another painter. At that point he will probably be mad and look for an excuse to send me home. My question is, do I have any rights in regards to asking him for this? I would think I certainly do and don’t want to get the guy in trouble but there’s a line I draw when it comes to my safety. Any answer appreciated.
March 15, 2014 at 2:51 am #46100I am not familiar with the laws in Canada but I can tell you here as regulated by OSHA, you can demand safety rights, but as long as the equipment is approved by OSHA, that’s all can ask, if the equipment he provides is approved, your out of luck. That’s here in the US of A. I don’t know how it works in good old Canada we have several well experienced guys that reside and work in there, lets hope one of them comes on and give us their 2 cents worth on this matter :cheers
My understanding is that the shop needs to have fresh breathing air supplied to the booth/prep areas.
It is up to the painter if he/she chooses to use it or not.
I believe the painter is responsible for purchasing the fresh air hood. Everywhere I’ve worked, the shop has paid for new filters, face shields etc.
Can any other Canadians confirm this, or have more concrete info?
March 15, 2014 at 4:06 am #46102Tech is in california so Im not sure what the laws are there so can’t comment. My boss has supplied fresh air masks but our booths move so much air there is no over spray so we just use 3m masks.I would be surprised if its NOT mandatory, all it would take is one claim to WCB or someone getting sick to completely screw over the shops ins/wcb etc.
well, I am sick with a dry throat and smelled clear coat on the last job I did. No one else in my family has gotten sick so I think it was from spraying. Just mucus. A charcoal mask would be fine but my boss lags on stuff all the time and don’t want to deal with his usual patterns of, “ok, I’ll get a new mask for you when the next job is done,” cause that’s probably why I’m sick right now.
March 15, 2014 at 9:03 pm #46117Geez if your boss won’t spring the $30 for a charcoal mask from the supplier he obviously doesn’t care about your well being. The charcoals will last for about 8hrs of spry time and they should be sealed when not in use.Technically you should remove the pre filters before storage as the uncured paint can cause them to expire quicker.I change my charcoals once a week but there is hardly any over spray in our booth.Hope your feeling better :cheers
this is more to do with legal requirments than workers rights ,never mind buying your own mask he should e supplying and maintaning the equipment and it should be up to spec regulation wise
just a mask is not enough you alsoe need the fresh air set ups to preclean the compressed air before it gets to the carbon filter on the mask which is only there as back up not a primary filter system ,and to put things bluntly im fucked if i would wear a used mask ,the old sprayer may have had the clap TB or AIDS for all you know

100% with you on this. I wouldn’t dream of sharing a mask with anybody!
Same with the air. We have ours inspected every 3 months to check it for oil vapour, CO levels and other such nasties. The belt filter should be thought of as a last line of defence.
