What steps do you guys take or techniques to be sure you don’t get zebra stripes on say a hood? I had a bit on the last car I did and i have to paint a hood here soon so I’m looking for tips as to how they are prevented.

Is the cause of them from spraying too dry? too wet? not enough overlap?

If your getting striping you need to check a few things. Whats your spray pattern look like? How much overlap do you use?

I like to use around a 75% overlap and I never have striping issues. Also I don’t know what brand of base your using, but if it is a polyester base they need to be sprayed a little wet.

If your gun is dirty or damaged and your spray pattern is distorted that will cause it also.

I found the source of my striping issues were from me holding my gun to close to the panel. The best way to prevent them is to do an orientation coat on all metallic colors. Basically on your last coat turn your pressure down to about 20psi, open your fan wide open and spray a light coat with a 90% overlap about 10 inches from the panel. Essentially your misting on base from a distance, this helps even out your metallics

try turning the fluid in on the gun an increasing ur distance about another 2 inches with a lil more air pressure thin is is when it comes ta met basecoats

orientation coat is a clear base foundation … :pcorn: a “drop coat” is I think what you mean dill. 😉 striping comes from wet going dark as the metalics sink and dry being light where the metalics sit on top :pcorn: many causes as suggested,…. but good over lap and a drop coat over your last wet coat of base should help as well as changing up your pattern from coat to coat.

 I was always taught that drop/control/orientation coat were the same . I’ve always referred to the clear base foundation as a wetbed. Someone needs to regulate all this lingo, us tradesmen are out of control :silly:

Initially I think i wasn’t using enough overlap, I haven’t had the problem since the first car I painted over a year ago But i haven’t had just a hood to spray in a while so I wanted to double check with you guys on what you do before I shoot this next one. Thanks guys!

ive had a problem with zebra stripes a couple times. it has always been with solvent based light metallic colors. BUT, i KNOW it happened only when i laid down the clear coat(on the hood). my gun is in near perfect condition(iwata w400, 1.3), clean as a whistle  and im sure i waited long enough for the paint to dry. it got annoying and got me a little gun shy with those colors. i havent had any problems now that we switched to water, but id still like to know whats going on. anybody ever had this problem?

well ya i have… if ya go a lil easy on the first coat of clear then double back on it it will keep the solvents from streaking it ya just wanna enuff ta lock it all down kinda like a half coat followed by a full coat also make sure an not heal ur gun hope this helps 😉
