Glad it’s going well for you! Are you baking the base? Do you have colour decks? Camera?
Which clear coats are you using, and how do they compare to the RM ones?
We don’t have towers in our booth, just stand mounted blowers, so I have to pretty much bake the base. Where I used to work we had towers in the booth and that would make this pain lightning quick. We have color decks and a camera. The color decks are pretty close and the camera works pretty well.
We use color system hs clear and it’s the best clear I’ve ever sprayed. I do miss my DC01NB clear and UV primer though.
Everything is labeled with a BMW part number. According to our rep color system is better than Standoblue, but they’re similar. We all know what that means.November 21, 2015 at 6:04 am #49164We just got the new generation color system in the shop this week and I’m loving it. I’ve had a few hiccups but nothing too bad. I love the way the metallics lay out and the fact that l can go back over and fix a dirt spot or other imperfection.
October 16, 2015 at 2:17 pm #49061The biggest thing is the ability to come back to your work if necessary. It just all around seems to be a better product.
October 16, 2015 at 5:59 am #49059Just finished up training on the next gen colorsystem and it seems like it’s an awesome product. Hopefully it works as well in the field as it did in the training center.
October 16, 2015 at 4:52 am #49057Is it a newer no bake clear? I always thought dc01nb sprayed a little thin for my taste. I don’t spray rm anymore unfortunately so it really won’t apply to me anyway.
September 29, 2015 at 4:01 am #49020We’re supposed to be switching the middle of November. I’m going for training in 2 weeks, can’t wait. So far it’s smoothing out but I do miss my old system. I’ve heard really good things about the new system though. I just hope the colors match a little better so we can get rid of the spies solvent. They use that as a crutch here whenever there’s a color match issue and I feel like the metallics lay down like crap.
September 10, 2015 at 3:06 am #48978About 2 and a half. The base does t like to go over itself, or so I’m told, once flashed off completely.
September 9, 2015 at 9:50 pm #48976I was painting a Subaru today, color code 02C. Everything laid out nicely and I was all set to clear when I noticed that I could see through the color into the primer. Anyone have any pointers how to correct this problem? I’m learning on the fly at this shop until we upgrade to 2nd gen color system, basically standohyd
August 24, 2015 at 3:28 am #48965Getting a better feel for the paint but still not 100% comfortable with it. When spraying a poor hiding solid color do you use a 3 stage additive or just let it flash completely and add another coat? What do you clean your gun with? I always used a water based gun cleaning solvent, as onyx was very sensitive to solvent, they tell me the previous painter always just used lacquer thinner.
August 19, 2015 at 4:32 am #48957I used to spray Onyx at my previous shop and while it had its drawbacks I found it pretty easy to work with. I used Sata 3000’s with a 1.4 tip for both low VOC solvent and water. I used HB004 and HB040 for most of the year and I was using it up until I left in July. I would’ve switched to HB004/HB020 now though. Some colors, reds and colors that had a lot of hb250, were poor hiding. The metallics lay down nice and a lot of times using water I didn’t even need an effect coat.
I wish I was still spraying it. I’m spraying BMW first gen color system and Spies solvent now and I hate both of them with a passion.August 18, 2015 at 2:58 pm #48951The application of the Standohyd is very different than Onyx so that’s taking some getting used to. Is it true that once it’s dry you can’t paint over it?
November 12, 2013 at 8:27 am #45371I use a SATA NR2000 1.3 and have for years. I thought about changing but it lays the clear down just the way I like it.
November 8, 2013 at 8:34 am #45341I use SATA 3000 guns and between 20-30 psi. I’ve tried an Iwata gun and if sprayed well but I felt like the quality wasn’t there. One thing I’ve been doing lately is baking the job if run into a problem. It makes it a lot easier to sand.
November 8, 2013 at 4:40 am #45331Pretty much the same experience I’ve had. We had to switch to keep our account with Mercedes. We’ve after a little trial and error that the colors actually match better than Diamont and we had Diamont there since the 90’s. I also think that I’m a bit spoiled since most of the time I get to just do the whole side, but for the most part I prefer Onyx.
November 3, 2013 at 7:50 pm #45238I’ve been spraying onyx for a few years and I don’t mind it. We’ve had our share of issues but it’s been ok for us. I was just wondering what problems you’ve encountered if you don’t mind answering.
