It may only be a Cobalt, but it’s pretty much a new one. And the factory paint isn’t bad at all. Also, I’m more so doing this for my own satisfaction.

Anyway, I had about 30 minutes of light after I got off work today so I did a bit of sanding/buffing to see the color match.

On the driver side it’s really close but the passenger side is noticeably darker. I did run out of base when I was in the middle of spraying the second coat and quickly refilled the gun, probably didn’t mix it enough before reducing :cens

    Driver side:

Not sure if I should scuff the whole thing and blend the passenger side of the bumper when I spray the hood and blend the fenders. Any other options?

I was testing on the box the new hood came in. It’s just hard with this gun, seems like when I get it set were I want, it’s shooting differently a couple passes later. Not sure if it’s the gun or my mind effing with me.

That is something I’m tempted to do but I doubt I can lay it on good enough not to need sanding/buffing. If you were to reclear it, it’d save time, I’m sure. With my skill level I’m pretty sure it’d just waste time/material as I would more than likely have the same outcome.

I do get to paint the top of the hood on my next day off and I will apply your suggestions and see what happens. Thanks.

Got a bumper and grill that fit today. Got some paint on the bumper and the bottom of the hood. Turned out alright. Some peel, not too bad, definitely fixable with my buffer and some paper.

Need to look into a better clear gun or tip. All i have is a 1.4 on a Central pneumatic (Harbor Freight) gun and it’s hard to lay a reliable layer.

    Anyway, picsssssss:

Got all the parts and paint today. Swapped out the radiator first and got it all dialed in mechanically.

Picked up a new hood, headlight, bumper cover and grill. Was aiming at getting it painted this afternoon but had to return the cover and grill due to fitment issues. I’ll be searching junk yards for OEM tomorrow, wish me luck.

Also, I will keep the hood as my first bodywork volunteer 👿

A little indecisive are we? haha.

I’ll look how much a new hood is, No used ones in my area with matching color(car-part.com search) I am kind of eager to give this a shot at repairing.

Sand paint, hammer/pull>filler>sand then respray shouldn’t be too hard.

Crap. Well I really hope it matches up well for him. I know he spent the extra $ to ensure a proper match…would be very upsetting if it was for nothing.

Great work and that is an amazing color.

What tool are you using to wet sand, paintwerks?

    June 20, 2011 at 7:49 pm #31362

I’m not sure what paint it was, my friend took it with him. I do know it was ridiculously expensive, something like $100 a half pint…something about only one company has the rights to make/sell it, I don’t know.

The gun I’m using the the Central Pneumatic 66222 from Harbor freight. http://www.harborfreight.com/high-volume-low-pressure-gravity-feed-spray-gun-66222.html

It was very frustrating trying to get it to lay the base like you guys are saying (I know what it should look like). I tried turning up the air pressure and adjusting the gun every which-way but I’m thinking it was the mixture. 1:1 just wasn’t enough. IIRC it’s a 1,2 nozzle. I would like to pick up some other sizes but am not sure what to get. it’s been a while since I’ve had the time to look into stuff.

Also I think you’re right ratstang, the first base coat was pretty light, then the second I layed it on pretty heavy in order to ensure coverage since it was spraying blotchy. Either way, I’ve made much worse paint jobs look great with some paper and my buffer, this one will be easy compared to others.

Thanks for the insight and compliments guys, it’s greatly appreciated.

The paint called for a 1:1 mix ratio. I thought it looked a bit thick but I don’t have the experience to know for sure so I just stuck to what the bottle called for.

About what consistency should I aim for?

    Looks awesome. Great work!

It’s too bad a nice paint job is flawed by the bad bodywork.
