Do yourself a favor and do it in ppg concept single stage, for a solid color it will look like a million bucks. Also keep in mind you will use more material if you use cheap paint,so the more you use the more it costs and it is not a bargain in the end. Also check into u-tech ,it is a fleet paint system that has incredible gloss and coverage at a great price,it is owned by akzo nobel(sikkens).
The concept SS is also really easy to use and gives a great finish. It covers better than Nason and Omni and has much better holdout. It is a very good quality product and a much more durtable resin than the Omni AU.
That’s good to know. I’m notoriously bad at time estimation so need all the help I can get. That’s a pretty full winter of fitting for me. Well as long as I know what I’m in for I don’t mind much. Nothing better to do. Anyway – keep the tips and estimates coming.
As far as fitting goes it varies. On a good clean job where all the panels are of good quality and all you have to do is basic alignment, an average car could be done in as little as an hour. But once you have to start modifying things the time can be infinite. You often need to remove parts…modify as needed, test fit and then do it again and again until you are happy. That is the key part…
I’ve used a lot of Nason and Omni over the years on cheap jobs. Of course, I must say first before hand that if it were my Fairlane I would spend the extra couple hundred $ and buy better product since neither the Nason or Omni has quite the same quality of resin and UV protection as the better paints.
But in any case I have found both the Nason and Omni to be easy to apply and if you are comfortable with the product you can get a great finish (smooth with excellent gloss and DOI/depth). I personally prefer the Nason slightly more than the Omni, myself.
As far as coverage goes, I would highly recommend a sealer. The coverage for both the Nason and Omni is not the best, although if you are spraying the Nason and you are not trying to hide too much you can get adequate results.
Cowl, and 1/4’s don’rt move so gotta start by lining up the doors and trunk lid to the 1/4’s and the hood to the cowl. fenders will have to be made to fit after that :pcorn:
Exactly…always have to start from the back and work your way forward. Adjust the gaps to the non adjustable parts first.
you may need to:
-adjust
-slot/die grind
-shim
-bend or roll edgesIt can become ugly and take a lot of work, but if you work at it in the correct sequence you should be able to get them fairly consistent.
That door hinge looks pretty easy to unbolt, so I would take the door off. Otherwise I would be afraid of causing damage to the hinge pillar and rocker while doing the repair. Plus it would be very difficult to work on it like that and try to do a proper job.
What kind of vehicle is this?
Does Napa sell Dupont up there? Around here they only sell Martan Senior.
Yep. All across Canada Napa (CMAX is their autobody division) supplies Dupont products including Spies Heckler. I don’t think you can buy Martan Senior here anymore.
Do you paint in the open? Nice job!
I sealed it with Duponts DTM epoxy primer/sealer and painted it with Chromapremiere and 72200 clear. I did prime it there; however, when I painted it I used the booth. This was when I worked at a small (not so great) shop last fall/winter after I was laid off…
nice work .. there is some thing for discussion … how many splice a box side ? and what are the advantages
I’ve never needed to splice a box side before. As mentioned, the only reason I did it is because the cost of the OEM boxside was too much, and a long bed version was not available aftermarket. I also could not find a good used one all the used ones were damaged. The used one I got was pooched pretty hard at the back…almost right up to where I spliced it. Sure got a good price buying a damaged box side from the wrecker though!
That is the same grate in the pair I used, and they DID have the water system…which doesn’t have a lot of airflow either.
They were great for small jobs, but as you mentioned, with bigger jobs the clear likes to linger for a littler longer than necessary.
Here is a shot of one of the spray bake booths…
Currious to see if any of you guys are using a spraybake booth. I have been spaying in one for 7 years now and have had to just learn to live with the fact that it has no air flow. I think its the grate design. Anyone have any input?
I’ve previously used the Spray Bake (don’t know if it too was a Gen 4 or not). Blue exterior, no hip lights, just the uppers (which are sodium lights IIRC, not colour corrected fluorescent).
They are better than most booths I’ve sprayed in…but I agree, the odd grate in the floor doesn’t seem to promote lots of airflow (not great for water bourne). And I found the lighting difficult to get used to. I always had a hard time spraying white, particularly on lower areas.
For the last year I have mostly used the Garmat 3000 w/ the booster fans. That booth seems to be a true workhorse!
well said ben, and all true for flat rate, which I don’t at this time condone. (reasons reserved) :kofee
I think I know what you mean. If I owned a shop I know how I would pay my employees…I don’t think all technicians that work flat rate share the same view point/professional pride as I do.
I am familiar with ABS which is a great program…but as you know it is expensive and time consuming to set up. I also know that there is similar software for ADP.
Sounds like what you have would fill in that void for small shops. Maybe consider having a Beta version for free (a version with limited features) and having the full version available for a reasonable price. You need to make money too. I am sure some small shops would be happy just having tracking software for free and others would gladly pay a small price to have other benefits such as invoicing
