Could I get some information on that clamp…have a stud gun and am interested in using it correctly. Thanks.
November 19, 2009 at 7:52 pm #17070I used some aluminum mesh on the backside – they will have to be painted as the profile isn’t perfect (doesn’t have to be for this job) – I don’t have a plastic welder, or I’d try that for sure.
November 19, 2009 at 6:07 am #17054I’m trying Norton Speed Grip epoxy for the first time…it’s drying up in the garage right now. I’ll post more when it’s done.
November 13, 2009 at 8:34 am #16944Ah, the Oilers…good to see Penner is coming around. Should have the other side done Friday night or Saturday then on to blasting the rest of the rust and getting it in epoxy while I do the rest of the bodywork. So much work…
November 13, 2009 at 8:31 am #16943Great video…what was the second gun loaded with in the first video?
November 9, 2009 at 5:56 am #16881Here’s today’s progress. The wind was howling, so welding outside was a challenge. First up I had to rebuild the inner fender and tire well. Here’s the finished product.
[img]http://www.calgaryvolvoclub.com/gallery/d/18569-2/HPIM1352.JPG[/img]Then the replacement outer panel was fitted.
[img]http://www.calgaryvolvoclub.com/gallery/d/18566-2/HPIM1351.JPG[/img]Welded all the way around. I’ll grind down the welds etc when I pull the car into the shop – it’s too cold out to worry about it for now.
[img]http://www.calgaryvolvoclub.com/gallery/d/18572-2/HPIM1355.JPG[/img]November 8, 2009 at 4:58 am #16856I had a buddy over today and we got a bunch of work done on this project. The car is actually remarkably solid underneath and the rust is limited to rear 1/4 lower as usual with the exception of the rust around the windshield which is pretty bad. We met in the AM and developed a game plan and pulled all the trim off the car. I then took it to the car wash for a good going over and a wash with Comet to clean off the wax and other contaminants.
The rear 1/4 areas are not bad and the inner parts are solid. The hack that did the bondo work actually used a reinforcing mesh to fill the hole – I was “impressed”…at least he wasn’t trying to hide his work.
[img]http://www.calgaryvolvoclub.com/gallery/d/18539-2/HPIM1338.JPG[/img]The replacement panels…hmmm, these need some shrinking.
[img]http://www.calgaryvolvoclub.com/gallery/d/18548-2/HPIM1341.JPG[/img]Ah, that’s better (other side).
[img]http://www.calgaryvolvoclub.com/gallery/d/18551-2/HPIM1342.JPG[/img]End of the day – no more front end (everything was bagged and tagged).
[img]http://www.calgaryvolvoclub.com/gallery/d/18560-2/HPIM1349.JPG[/img]No more rear end.
[img]http://www.calgaryvolvoclub.com/gallery/d/18563-2/HPIM1350.JPG[/img]There are still some parts to strip off the car and put away, then I’ve got to get the rear end welded up, a little sandblasting.
No time lines yet, but we’ll just keep on plugging.
November 8, 2009 at 4:52 am #16855Wow, why do people load cars full of filler like that – that’s just hideous. What’s the story on that lift? Looks like a cool addition to any garage.
November 7, 2009 at 8:03 pm #16840Welcome – I’m new here too. There is a great group of guys on the board and they’ve all been very helpful.
I’m from Lethbridge…..small world…..Welcome!!!
Cool – good to have someone local.
November 7, 2009 at 7:55 pm #16838Thanks for all the tips – I should be able to work on a pattern/technique as I prime/seal the car. I’ve got a little welding and dinging to do, but should have the car apart and in the shop this weekend. Then it’s on to sanding and shooting it.

November 7, 2009 at 1:33 am #16815Cool, that’s the way I’ve always done it. Chasing the dry spot…so you don’t start on the same place everytime – oh, that’s going to require some thought.
