Done – thanks again for all the support. That UTech 4.0 clear rocks :rock . Not bad for my first pearl! Not perfect, but I’m happy.

December 15, 2010 at 6:36 am #26225Thanks Ben,
Things have smoothed out a little. Three coats of pearl and I’ve got this. Just waiting on flash time for clear. I’m going to let it sit for a while – that’s a lot of paint.

December 15, 2010 at 5:13 am #26218Yes, I’m strong with the Princess. I sanded them out and shot the base. Turned out great. I just put on the first coat of pearl – it’s freaking amazing. I also owe you guys big time on the paint volume call. I had to dip into the second pint of base – boy am I glad I had that. OK – time to get back in there and shoot the next coat.
December 15, 2010 at 3:26 am #26212I’ve got Pro Form W&G…what’s the real stuff. I do tack between coats and will invest in real waterbased cleaner. I just shot the base – went well for round one anyway. Gotta let it flash and get back out there.

Here’s the start with the keyed area and the decal removed.
Epoxy and then some 2K spot primer.
All set up and ready to shoot.
Tank in sealer.
Little stuff in sealer.
Contamination..grrrr.
Of course there also has to be some contamination on the damn tank! I have a new apprciation for those that paint motorcycles.
Here’s my rig…I’m going to go put the filter on the other side of the regulator, I was in a rush :stoned
December 15, 2010 at 12:59 am #26206Sh!t…just got in from laying the sealer and I’ve got some contamination (silicon? Wax?). I washed all the parts and wet sanded them with soap then degreased and used windex. Then I let them dry for an hour before the sealer…and I still have issues. I even degreased everything before I started sanding. If I paint in a wind storm in the back lane, I have no problems…if I’m really careful, I get issues.
I guess I’ve got more sanding to do. Any tips?
December 14, 2010 at 7:28 pm #26195Getting after it today. I picked up some UTech sealer and another couple of pints of paint. I wish I could take a vid to get more tips on technique. Off to set up the garage for paint.
December 13, 2010 at 8:15 am #26158Ok – what’s a letdown panel? (a few minutes later…google to the rescue) – so it’s a spray card. Got the idea. I’ll get the extra as having it is less risk than not having the extra paint.
December 13, 2010 at 6:48 am #26152
U-tech,lesonal.sikkens are all akzo nobel products, the non mixing brands does not apply.I think you are going to be shy on paint, you need to do a let down panel to see how many coats are needed for your mid coat 2,4,6 coats.Solvent needs more coats of midcoat to get your effect.White sealer is definately a good idea.
Looks like I’d better get some more paint…another pint? I’ll see if they have some white sealer.
December 13, 2010 at 1:25 am #26139I use to have a boss that said “you shouldn’t get every quote.” He was right. Tell them what it’s worth, itemize the bills and don’t forget to tell them you’re worth it. Craftsmanship costs money.
December 13, 2010 at 1:08 am #26138Sorry – U-Tech 4.0 clear (I’ve just finished using my UPol primer…) and I should be able to make it under the wire if I need more base! I’ve got a fairing and 2 small side pieces and the tank is 15 gallons. No fenders etc. I was going to seal it using some Dimension sealer that I’ve got – it’s light grey. Thoughts?
December 13, 2010 at 12:16 am #26130Hi Jayson,
I just sprayed the UPol primer surfacer and it’s drying right now. I got a pint of each – With reducer that’s 3 pints sprayable…I hope this is enough. I got a full gallon of the UPol 4.0 clear. I’m trying it out on your suggestion – too bad it has to be a three stage!
December 12, 2010 at 10:31 pm #26119Thanks Ben – lots of tips. There is a butt load of little parts with odd shapes. I’ve done little stuff lots and know what a pain they are to do…going to work on being methodical. I’m taking pics as I go.
