I disagree,if you apply 2-3 coats let it sit for a day or 2 you will get rid of solvents and possible shrinkage. When you sand it flat that cuts out texture and gives you a smoother substrate for flow coating,so yes its different.I understand all about custom painting an how much material you can have, but you will cut down on problems with 2 clear coat applications.A video of someone endorsing his own custom painting techniques and product means nothing, lets see what the car looks like in person and after a couple of years.I have seen many a “showcar paintjob”that looks like butt due to too much material, sand scratch swelling, swirls etc.
Great post Jay. Another thing to mention is by putting 3 coats on, sanding and applying 2 more, not only will it be flatter then just hammering on 5 coats at once, it will also be thinner because you’ve sanded some mils away (at least 1 coat maybe more). IMO 5 coats of clear in one sitting is too much, It’s a dangerous game piling that many fresh solvents on top of each other.

I use to clear with my RP further from the panel, probably about the 8 or 9 inches and I can tell you that the positive results of holding the gun closer to the panel are real. You’ll use less product and get the job done quicker and probably with a better finish. For what it’s worth I get my best results at 27psi

I’ve been using the devilbiss floor control that Ryan mentioned. it keeps the dust down and when you do a sweep the dirt all clumps together like a snowball rather then making a big cloud of dust in front of your broom.
you know when we switched to enviro, we had to get their new sealers for that line, the old sealers wouldn’t work with the new base. i was told that the base wouldn’t bit to the sealer as well. maybe it could be the sealer and the base isn’t getting any bite.

i wouldn’t think that the base still haveing moisture would casue it, the few times that i have cleared enviro that was still a little wet, the only thing it would do was dye back.

but i will admit this is interesting. but i don’t think we’ll find out the problem.
Man if my paint rep was blatantly lying to my face like that I’d be pretty pissed off. Global sealers were the standard to go under EHP until they released a low VOC sealer. I have no doubt The products are compatible.

I have a SATA 3000 RP for base and clear and it’s great. I’ve done demos on both the 4000rp and the Supernova with + without the hybrid tip. Both guns were great in their own way. Really either way your getting a great gun it really comes down to what the user likes

In my eyes the Tri stage is a tool that allows us to achieve colors and effects that would never be as vibrant as a 2 stage process. It’s really that simple.

Oh shit son, if you’re up here then it’s Aquabase for sure. It blends pretty good IMO. just follow the tech sheets specs and you’ll be all good. Just out of curiosity why are you going to be working less with Autowave and more with Aquabase?

Just to be sure, are you talking about the old solvent Autocolor line, or the waterborne Aquabase?

If you’re backtracking from Autowave to Autocolor that makes no sense at all  . Water is the way to go.

If you’re talking about Aquabase It is the sister system to Envirobase, they are the same paint system only relabeled as far as I can tell. I’ve even talked to people who have intermixed toners from both systems with no repercussion. Having used both Nexa and EHP in trade school and EHP in my day to day work for the last 3 years I can assure you they both perform very well in pretty well all aspects. Anyone on here spraying water will tell you if you’re not on Autowave, you better be on EHP/Aquabase.

Metallics and tricoats apply fairly well in EHP. I’ve never really had any trouble with blends and I seldom put down a wet bed. some silvers I will drop a second control coat. It’s probably not necessarily needed each time but I like to think of it as insurance
