Thanks brother. I am supposed to be meeting with the rep this week to go over the mixing system and I will ask if they have something like that. They are a pretty big outfit so im sure they do.
February 3, 2013 at 2:25 am #40973That is a beautiful looking booth. I would love to have something like that!
February 3, 2013 at 1:11 am #40967I never have “too” much trouble. But then again, I do spray with a Sagola so…. :rock As long as I try to just sand the nib, its not too flat. Maybe one of those little 3m nib sanders would be worth while. Awfully pricey though.
February 2, 2013 at 7:38 pm #40960Yeah for me I dont really care much about how fast it is. Just as long as it sprays nice. I think after I use it for a while I will demo an RP to see what the difference is. If I like the RP better, it will be in my box. I have no quams about buying tools when I need them.
There are other places I need to pick up speed more than when I paint. I have always done total restos, and they are more like do it the very best possible and speed is of little concern. That will be a hard habit to break.
Jayson do you spray your clear the same way? 30-33 psi, 3-4 inches, and 75% overlap?February 2, 2013 at 6:42 am #40947The dude I work with said he used to do a ton of Corsica’s back in the day for paint failures. He said he used to use a razor/scraper. My boss used to work at the same place as this guy and apparently he was able to do them so fast that GM sent a team down to learn what he was doing. I guess he was doing 3 times what anyone else could. This old dude is an animal though….so….
February 2, 2013 at 6:34 am #40946If they are good, I think they usually just shoot right on the factory coating. I couldnt really tell you for sure. I just started here a few weeks ago, and they guy that was here quit. There is a new guy here now that does most of the collision work. At least while im banging out the GTO. The “new” guy (30+ years of experience) is supposedly one of the best around. I can tell you I have never seen someone that can prep a car as fast as this guy! He destroys me in that department…and hes damn near 60 years old. Hes the one that did the body work on the quarter panel of that truck. It was hammered in and huge. He had it banged out, filled, and sanded in no time. It freeks me out! They say he is one of the best painters around, but doing collision work its pretty hard for me to tell. But everyone that does restos hires him to come spray their high end jobs. Im hoping to pick up some tricks from him!

But to be honest, thats what I used to do with my Sata 3000 HVLP gun. It sprays just the right texture for this stuff. Its funny timing actually. I got the Sagolas to make my restos as smooth as possible, and at the same time took a job doing collision work. I will still spray maybe 6-10 restos a year, so its all good.
I did use a medium speed clear today and it seems to match the peel better than the ultra fast dry stuff. Maybe the quick dry is thinner and sprays flatter…I dont really know. This is all pretty new to me.February 2, 2013 at 4:01 am #40939I think I have the peel down pretty good now with the Sagola. Matches up just right on the GM anyway. Took Jaysons advice and dropped it down to 25 psi and it worked well.
Attachments:February 2, 2013 at 3:55 am #40936They always come beat to hell, so after a little bodywork I usually spray them with the 4:1:1 primer. It sprays real nice and takes minimal sanding.
February 2, 2013 at 3:20 am #40930Sorry yeah I meant seal before primer. We don’t really use much sealer here. Didn’t know if there was another step necessary between the normal steps.
February 1, 2013 at 8:00 am #40911Well I only got one of the trucks done today. Peel came out pretty close. Sanded my nuts off on the GTO most of the day.
Attachments:January 31, 2013 at 5:25 pm #40897No in fact I’ve only used the Sagola like 3 times. I use it only for clear. I have a Sata 3000 HVLP digital that I use for base. It really lays metallics nice.
