well , like above post , different materials needs different techniques. I use DeVilbiss GTI Pro 1,3 with T1 aircap for MS and HS clears . For VOC clears from Standox ( VOC 2K , VOC Platinum … ) i use SATA 4000 RP 1,3 on 2,0 bar pressure , these clears goes in 0,5+1 full coat application and SATA is fast as hell.
I also use new GTI Pro Lite with 1,2 , this one i little messy because of 3 air caps ( T10,T20,T30) , im still learning with this gun.
For base coat i use GTI Pro 1,3 with H1 aircap on 2,0 bars , even spread of metallics , even when you have 2 or 3 pearl colors in mix there’s no clouding , but you have to be careful with finish effects , the pressure have to be below 0,5 bars on nozzle ( 1,3-1,6 inlet pressure )
When i work on 3 or 4 stage colors i use SATA 4000 HVLP , really fast gun , i must calculate +300 grams of color with this gun but it pays of when you see job done .Well , i’m using Standoblue for about 18 months and i’m kickin it , less amount of color is used , no flash of times – full coat + fast dust coat . It’s dry in 20 minutes . I’ve been on Cromax Pro presentation and i don’t like it . For example on Audi A6 ( 2009 ) who has 26 m3 i’m spending around 1-1,2 kg of mixed base including viscosity adjuster ( 20 % for effect colors ) . Someone in post said that you have to take accounting so lets split some info :
– one day prep , 2 guys , up to 10 hours of labour x 2
– material , on day’s end application of filler– second day , 1 guy , prep filler for base coat , masking , painting , clear coat app.
– third day , unmasking , sanding + polishing ( if needed , 2 of 10 cars )
In my case costs are :
Labour : 40 work hours ( full car prep + painting ) = from 1000 to 1500 EUR
Color : 100 EUR
Clear : 100 EUR
Prep Material : 100 EUR
Paint Booth 1 hour : 50 EUR
TOTAL FOR WORK AND MATERIAL minimum : 1400 EUROn top + 2000 EUR for Mastery :teach ,
So for car of this size minimum minimum minimum income is 2.000 EUR or in dollars around 3000…
In my country that’s a LOT of money , for example in Switzerland i was at my friends shop , oh man the pricing…. full paint job on 7 series BMW goes from 8 do 12000 EUR :exci
So man , there’s money just take it
in garage i have Me Myself and I :woohoo: , well … there’s a bunch of guys every weekend because on work days we don’t have free time . Mainly there is 3-4 of us , and we all work as a instructors for bodyshops and painters so imagine us work something bad on a cars. It must be a high end quality jobs every time .
For base color we use classic Standox base and Standoblue , Standohyd is kicked out ( crap base ) . Clear coats hmmm … VOC 2K ( one with additive ) is some middle range , then VOC Premium an VOC Extra , on Mercedes mainly VOC Platinum ( ceramic ) , low end is VOC Easy but not in 2:1 combo with VOC Easy Hardener , we mix it with VOC Hardener 20-25 in 3:1 combo adding 20% thinner , then we apply ONLY one fulllll coat . When i say fullll i mean really slow movement of the gun over surface . Normaly VOC easy clear is dry after 24h , in our combination is dry in 3-4 hour , ready to drive .Preparation is FULL 3M abrasives , tapes etc… Normally as any other shop we have used almost everything from other producers : DuPont , Spies , Glasurit , Mipa , 4CR , DeBerr , Sikkens ………………….. but we love STANDOX :rock :rock .
If you have Standoblue it’s not a problem at all . Application is in 4 stage :
1.Standox VOC Filler
2.Standoblue Base in 1,5 passes ( full coat + imm. “dust” coat )
3.Standox VOC Extra Clear tinted with additive Transparent Red and Light Red
4.Standox VOC Extra Clear normal applicationBlending in is a pain in the ass but it can be done
