Thanks. Oh it’s far from a work truck now. He had California Car Cover cut one down just so it fits the cab. Wouldn’t surprise me if he had them make one for the bed..lol.
November 12, 2012 at 12:32 am #39112Only sheet metal work was replaced the floor from back seat forward and center trunk floor. The car sat for 25 years in a concrete building with concrete floor. Some pinholes on bottoms of the quarters and re-did existing patches on the bottoms of the fenders. Hood was replaced because he sold it to a guy 15 or so years ago. Wish they were all like this.
November 11, 2012 at 8:31 pm #39092Thanks ryan. Yes..good stuff. I haven’t been using it lately. Been using the norton paint check and the 3m gold here lately.
November 11, 2012 at 8:24 pm #39088Thanks Bill. Spartanburg, SC. Not too far from you it looks like.

Before you purists chime in…there were a few things we didn’t do back like factory…..well because some of it looks like shit, IMO :p
October 26, 2012 at 2:30 pm #38804Just follow the recommended times in the TDS of the epoxy, you will be fine. What epoxy are you using?
October 24, 2012 at 4:15 pm #38760I tried the ultra. Seemed to sand pretty good…stayed tacky on the top surface though and was a heavier body. I really didn’t see an advantage over the 3m platinum which is what I’ve been using for a while now. The platinum costs me $32 a gallon and the Ultra was around $45 a gallon. Platinum it is for me…without even looking at the cost really.
Used the platinum plus a few times but I always went back to the Platinum. 3m did themselves a good service by buying Marson…except when it was under marson it was like $24 a gallon. lol.
October 16, 2012 at 1:46 am #38655My process for those vettes has always been epoxy then a poly primer over bare glass. Now you will get varying opinions on using the epoxy…whatever floats your boat.
But poly primer has pretty much taken the place of using gel coat over the bare glass. Fiberglass isn’t going to come back through the poly. Only time you are going to see that is the repair mapping if done incorectly especially with the wrong products.

And the ultra thin layer of clear that is left after all that sanding probably looks pretty good and will hold up forever…
I wish I didn’t go to school, or do an apprenticeship, I could have learned all the “right” ways on the internet and be the next Chip Foose. Now where is my Pro Form clear coat and lacquer putty, I have another show car to start…better stock up on the 400 grit now.[/quote]
Don’t think I saw anyone saying use lacquer putty for show cars.
Anyway….I’m not sure on the arguements here…….there are just 2 different mindsets. Does anyone believe that you can win the Riddler Award with an out of the gun finish? Jeez…they even cut and buff the frames and suspension components, if painted. There are people that compete for that award that aren’t “popluar” or “known” builders.
Are the guys/gals that win these big awards any less skilled than the guy painting everyday for the majority of his life? I don’t think so and vise versa.
:silly:
August 16, 2012 at 1:21 am #37859easy now…lets not start throwing that “crap” term around..
 😛
July 30, 2012 at 4:44 pm #37740No fiberglass, just primer. The dash has a thick soft foam pad then vinyl. I used sikkens 2+1 hs primer with 50% elast-o-actif flex addative. Primed and sanded twice to remove texture. Same as the door panels and console…those were hard plastic with texture, only used maybe 10% elasto to help with any chipping. Everything has held up fine, and drove the car like this every day as it was my only form of transportation up untill about 3 years or so ago.
Worth noting, this is the second dash I did. The first dash I only put 30% elasto in the primer, and eventually started cracking around the defrost vents from the constant temp change in the winter. This dash has been perfect at 50%. The elasto seems to slow the dry time down some so I waited probably a week in between sanding an re-priming to make sure it was cured good. I did not add the flex to the clear, ACIII.
July 25, 2012 at 10:35 pm #37705whats wrong with painting your dash??

July 11, 2012 at 5:49 pm #37635Sorry, didn’t see your post before I posted my reply. LKQ bought out all the factory akzo nobel stores and they now distribute. All akzo reps are still employed by akzo…not lkq/keystone. Atleast that is the way it worked here. All the employees from the store just got transfered to keystone.
Oddly enough, I see my akzo rep more often now, than I did when they had their own store.
