i have a small one for stripping little areas that have decals under the clear on some bikes. for doing big stuff i have a 8″ psa backup pad that fits on my buffer. i’ll throw a 36 or 80 grit disc on it and goto town. i’ll tell you you had better be wearing a full suit when using it. makes old paint fly through the air like its snowing out!! those strip discs you are using do work good though. i might see if i can track some down to keep around the shop.
August 13, 2009 at 2:21 am #15327well i have been taking progress pics of the t-bucket project. it’ll be about 3 weeks before its done but when it is i will do another write up. this project will be a bit more complex so it should be interesting! 😉

August 2, 2009 at 3:21 pm #15120here is some refrence for you for the granite.

turn the psi way down. mix 3 shades of grey sort of close in color, spatter them on. then mix some intercoat clear with hok sparkle white pearl and do the same. the bc1190 cut down with some bc100 may work as well but have not tried it. i know you have that right on your rack so it would be easier for you. the key to make it believeable is your color choices on the grey and getting the pearl spattered on right. you should get an actual piece of granite for a sample.
August 2, 2009 at 6:29 am #15114haaa thats funny about the 3m stuff. i have always used the pg27 and their mg tape as well. like 3m green but as you said too pricy so i have just kept with the pg. the 3m rep was around about a month or 2 ago and showed me the new yellow tape which i really like and its priced really good so i am going to switch over to that. it is funny that you said it seems the same as the green…..because it is, just about anyway. the rep kinda let the cat out of the bag when i hammered him with some questions. he admitted the yellow has the exact same adhesive as the green. the only real difference to me is that the paper is just a touch thinner which is actually nicer because you can tear it off easier. other than that it is the green tape turned yellow at 1/2 cost. i have no proof but here is what it boils down to. 3m isn’t selling much green tape because its priced too high so instead of dropping the price on the green and admitting they have been screwing everyone for years they simply color it different, give it a different part # and bam they have a nice new product to sell you and they have admitted nothing and come out like the good guys for bringing out a great new tape at a good price!!! thats how 3m does it.
for paper i use mostly norton. their new finishing film, the q260 is really awesome. blows the 3m stuff away.
August 1, 2009 at 11:54 pm #15108ryan, there are alot of educational videos out there. a great source for them is http://www.smartflix.com. instead of buying them for $40 each you can just rent them, burn a copy for yourself for future refrence and return it. besides that you just need to start playing around with it on some of your own projects. its alot of trial and error but thats how you learn.
August 1, 2009 at 4:09 am #15086hmmm? 2006 since the last one, i guess its a bit overdue. i will have to do another one i guess. you know i have a t-bucket here that i am just starting. i’ll document with pics then do one on that as it should be pretty killer when done.
July 31, 2009 at 5:08 am #15071here is a link with a ton of boat ideas for you. this used to use all basf on his stuff. about a year ago switched to akzo. anyway will give you some ideas. there is nothing really special you need to know. put epoxy primer over the gelcoat and go through your normal procedure. one thig though, you dont really paint all the way to the edge of the chine. run a 1/4″ piece of fineline on the edge so you base and clear end 1/4″ up. this keep the water and travel lift straps from beating the edge if the paint and chipping it all up. if your just doing a solid color then go with a ss urethane like bondo recommended otherwise bc/cc works fine. all the boats in this gallery are all bc/cc.

July 30, 2009 at 4:04 pm #15054well i have been using the 2020 on stuff here but never on the final clear session that has to be buffed out….until now. i just didi a bike that was just a 1 color job and it looked so good with the 2020 clear i just had the kid here 1000 then 1500 it as ususal then go right to buff. let me tell you that don’t work with that clear. 1500 finishing film scratches comes right out of the universal and ms clear. now i did the same thing on another bike yesterday but went to 3000 trizact. 2020 buffed right out no problem and it had been sitting for a good 2 weeks here with super high humidity. i am really liking the 2020 more and more because its a bit harder, doesn’t scratch anywhere near as easy and looks every bit as good as univeral clear. only key is you gotta goto 3000 with it.
July 30, 2009 at 3:52 pm #15053you just base everything out in black then the colorchange is just a pigment in a clear binder. ususally about 4 coats or so and your done. its not difficult and takes no special tallent to put it down. as an allover though its a bit dated since its been around for years. it is better as an effect in graphics, etc. jimmo, in that particular pic, that car was done with the camelion pearls. you can see its kinda sparkly. that is a dry powder you put in a clear binder and is different than the regular hok camelion and others. its just coarser, sparkles more and comes dry. basf has both available. the original camelion is called extreme colors and the camelion pearls as you seen in your pic is some of the pf powders. pf85 is one.
