I have 700,750 and 800.I have used them all in various situations..Just am not happy whatsoever with gloss retention..I lay them out and walk away they look great , next day the dieback begins….If I bake these clears it speeds up that entire process..
I am using the finest PPS cups..Blue ones…the little contaminates still get through….
and I allways seal with the appropriate value shade…
I have been painting for 30 years,I know a little bit,but changing over to this VOC Compliant paint has realyy taken the wind outta my sails….
Gives a whole new meaning to hearing about sitting around and watching paint dry….September 19, 2014 at 5:26 am #47414I am using Envirobase and cant find a clear I like from PPG that dont dieback tremendously..
Can you tell me what clears you guys are using over the Envirobase???September 19, 2014 at 5:07 am #47413been painting for quite some time, been using Envirobase now for over 3 years, let me say I have never been satisfied with it,first off there isnt a clear they make that is compliant (i live in MD,VOC Compliant State) That is even satisfactory..It might be ok for the used car department at some dealerships but either they wont buff easy, they die tremendously, they are so very way overpriced but I just think its unacceptable but they continue to tell us a newly formulated clear is right around the corner!!! As for the base, well the color match is very good,The blues are very very transparent and seems they spit crap out of the mix and make the job dirty looking, recently now it seems that the newer later model reds are also becoming more and more transparent..and the stuff doesnt dry very quickly, alot of time I have to turn heat up in booth to burn off the humidity to get the stuff to dry…I have no sucess whatsoever when I attempt to bake these products, they dieback so bad they HAVE to be buffed all the while I am spending upwards of $350 for a freaking gallon of clear!!!!!
When I do all overs I order dbc and 2021 over the web and when I shoot the car I am amazed at how the car actually shines…I am in search of a new product line at this time…very very unhappy..not to mention I can guarantee that when I shoot the base if it is a light color some darker colored tint will spit through the PPS cup and waste the job and I need to go strain and double strain the stuff..We have our own shop and this money comes outta my pocket and our profits I am no longer patient with the PPG Envirobase…June 14, 2014 at 12:45 am #46805Yes clears suck in my opinion, its almost as though they are wet and soft for a much longer time, thus far allowing the clear to be open to scratching much easier as to compared to a clear that gets hard more quickly..Yes I am shooting the Envirobase system all the way through..from sealers to waterbase to ec clears…I do put another clear on top of some of my cheaper jobs made by sikkens called Wanda…. I have played with lotsa clears and this water and found that price, quality ease of use The Wanda hands down came up as a good choice!!!!
Prior to the PPG Envirobase I shot PPG DBC for last 12 years..FYIJune 13, 2014 at 1:57 pm #46802Believe it or not it also is best to use the slower hardener in the sealer because it will give you the flow you need without the work ,whereupon we tend to force flow from using the medium hardeners and therefore using more material in the long range needing even more flash time…
You will know if you ever do not let the sealer flash long enough because the base has a very strange reaction to being put on top of wet sealer…its like the metallics just go nutz and it looks all motley and almost seperates….
Overall the clears are just not all they can be in my opinion and are way over priced,I am being told they are very close to releasing a new clear that is much better..I have had very good luck with smaller jobs and using the 800 clear….very fast,in the rain in an hour!!!!! Deliverable within the same day!!!!June 12, 2014 at 2:46 pm #46797I have been painting for 30 years, live in compliant state of MD.I was having these same exact issues all the time, after playing with every single variant as making the clears look their best the ONLY solution seemed to be to not bake them!!!! Now fortunately I have small independent shop that can afford to do this with time management and all…
