For as cheap as used booths are right now, I would just buy one and be done w/ it.. I have seen used cross drafts go for 800-1500 in this area, side down drafts w/ heat as cheap as 3500.. When you figure your time and materials to build one it would be hard to beat a used one right now.
Dont waste the money, it will be no different that what you went through trying to be a mechanic. You will have to start at the bottom no matter if you goto school or not.. Personally I would go back to school and get a degree in something that will actually make you a good living, fixing cars it not a very stable career these days.
Actually I know many shops that only mix toners across the scale. I am not an owner that just sits in the office. I still paint cars weekly and continue to do bodywork on a needed basis. I am around my guys most of the time, I also am the one to do weekly inventory and I know what we use weekly. It wouldnt take me more than 5 minutes to figure out if someone was stealing. But like I said all of my guys have been here almost 15 years, I would trust any of them to run this place. I can leave for 1-2 months and not worry about a thing if needed. The big difference between me and you is I am STILL running a successful shop and you ARE NOT. The fact that you can make more money working for someone else than working for yourself says it all, you didnt have what it takes..And I dont care how bad your market is, we have almost 20% unemployment and I am still making money, and paying my guys better than any other shop in the area. I have 5 shops within less than 2 miles from me, not included the other 100 that are less than a 15 mile radius. Most body man/painters can do the work but have no clue how to run a business! I am official done w/ this thread! Whine about not getting free paint to your supplier not here!
I know what he is after, but my point is a painter at a shop should not be getting the free materials for his or her own projects, or side work. I can see the reps giving free materials to the shop itself, helps them gain business. But giving it directly to a painter for his or her personal gain does nothing for Sikkens or your wholesale jobber. If they want to be nice and do it, fine, but they stand to gain nothing.
My painters have all been with me for almost 15 years, so I must be doing something right..No I am not greedy, but I am in business to make money, not just play round and treat it like a hobby. They have had materials given to them free, from me via our supplier. But my supplier would never directly give them free materials, and everything we mix goes across a scale so I would know if guys were taking product. It is tracked very very closely. My guys are paid well enough that they dont need to do side work or steal materials to make a living…
The shop pays the materials bills not you, why do you think you deserve free materials? You arent generating the business, the shop is! None of my painters get free materials, I will sell them anything the need at cost, but until they are paying the paint bill they will not get free materials. If I chose to give them any free materials I get that is my choice. Just pay for what you use and all will be fine. Nothing is free in life..
Yep it all about paying out as little as possible.. We have been DRP free for 8 years now(was on 30 programs, all the big companies, some small ones to), best thing I ever did.. Profits are much better, less stress, better repairs, happier customers.. Its a win win, to bad we had to many uneducated shop owners out there that let these DRP programs exist. You can make more money as an independent, but you will actually have to market your shop! Not let the insurance company do it for you..
