Yeah just strange that the prices vary so much.. Stone and I have talked about BASF pricing and the list price is so much higher in his area.. I was just thinking sikkens would be the same as far as retail goes. Just funny how they can vary the price so much from area to area.. sometime I will pm you some clear prices to see how close we are, since we buy about the same.

Sounds like we might have similar sized operations, our average this year has been 19k a month.. Even with the discount BASF is still cheaper here.. I think we pay less here, we also buy direct, not sure if you do or not.. We have no Sikkens jobbers in this area.

You guy must have a different price structure up there, BASF is way way less than PPG, except omni.. I would be curious as to what you are paying for autowave?!

Global is hard to get rid of around here no one wants it.. If anyone is interested their is a complete machine with toners and computer for 800 in my area. Most toners are new unopened.. It isnt a great system, colors and coverage are bad.. But would work for a diy guy..

Hate to get in the middle of a battle, but I am sorry Stone you are behind the times. If you knew you had to be compliant why would you wait until the last second?! We have been on water for over two years now, yes we had some issues at first, but now everything is working great! We have no date yet here in the great lakes to switch, but I figured we would be proactive. I would surely not wait until the last month to switch, you give yourself no time for a learning curve and have no backup.. And as far as cheap clears go, its a give and take unless you find the right one. I would much rather push 2 more cars through the shop because we saved time buffing for die back, that wait two days to buff cheap clear. Its not profitable no matter how you look at it. You always mention you are booking into the next month, have you ever thought about changing your process and materials to get more cars done in the same amount of time and still have good quality??! Yes it is possible. You can make more and work less if change the way you are doing things.. Either move forward or move over!

You could try giving more time in between coats if time will allow. We had no die back issues when we were using RM. We used mainly DC5300 though.. If you are looking for a cheaper clear that will work just as good or not better try Napa Acme FC720/FC710. I have painted many with it, using RM base and never had any issues. No die back, nothing.. Probably the best clear for the money. Others are using it on here as well.

DC5600 clear will do that, its a production clear, if you speed anything up you will get die back usually. I really never cared for it.. Try dc5300, doesnt seem to die and pinch at all. Its a bit slower, but will save time buffing in the end.

I have two booths, one is a side downdraft the other is a full downdraft. I installed the downdraft when I first built the place 10 years ago. Its a spraybake, was around 80k after install. As we grew the need for a second booth came up, I didnt want to borrow money so we decided on a middle of the road booth;a side downdraft. Was around 30k installed with everything, fire suppression, heat, etc. Both booths will put out the same quality work, but the downdraft does move a bit more air and seems to work better with waterborne paints. The side downdraft will get the job done but has some dead spots for air flow. But if I had to do it over again I would put in two side downdrafts and be done with it.. Cheaper, hold their value better, faster to install, and easier to maintain. Plus I could of gotten two booths for the less than the price of the new spraybake. Plus if I ever pull the spraybake out I will have a big hole in the floor to deal with.

Boy farmers out your way are hard on trucks! Around here we use semis and service trucks for the hard work and leave the pickups in the shop 🙂

We cut and buff on a needed basis. We never cut and buff on Domestic stuff, or Japanese. Most of the European cars get a cut and buff since they are pretty flat from the factory.I do have one full time detail guy so that takes the weight off the painters.

Why dont you like Sikkens? They have the best water system out there. If you cant make autowave work you will really be pulling your hair out with other systems!

Screw the 101 and its backyard warriors that preach bad advise over and over again!! The ones that claim to be professionals are at best novice painters and body men. The site needs a good house cleainng! I feel for the beginners looking for good advise. They are starting off on the wrong foot before even getting to the garage by reading some of that garbage. Jimmo has a good thing going here, with a great group of professional guys! Except for a few that is; bondo, ding.. 😛 I dont really go there anymore unless I want a good laugh. Its sad to say..
