Up until I got the shop about 8 years ago I used to be mobile. Work was primarily dealers which was ok in the sense that it was reasonably consistent but as the pressures on them grew to make use of every square inch of yard space I found I was being squeezed out.
Downsides were that it was impossible to work in the rain, couldn’t use 2K products at all and you could spend a lot of time, unproductive, travelling. Having the shop I’ve kept most of my trade customer base and been able to develop much more retail work, plus, importantly, productivity has improved out of sight and I can employ others.
In the shop we still focus mainly on small repairs and do no panel beating at all, just paint. There is a good market for it and the bigger panel shops actually refer work to us now, especially small repairs that they couldn’t be bothered doing. It does take quite some time to build up a big enough retail customer base so we do use radio advertising to help this along
I’d never go back to it.
this is the kinda shop i’m trying to set up, all light work, fast, small repairs.

April 8, 2013 at 1:15 am #42673good thinking, i’m sure i could buy a cheap mig, stick a stud nozzle on it. i could weld a nut onto a set of grips and screw it onto my slide hammer or do as u say and use washer. i’ll try and get behind the damage first anyway.
April 7, 2013 at 11:28 pm #42670hilux, i haven’t really looked at it properly yet as i’m just finished doing this:

March 25, 2013 at 1:24 am #42393
Hey we’ve all been chatting bout the 3m sun gun. If you go on my thread (fixing the both) there’s links and ideas on the 3m sungun. Ideas on how to make a home made on it buying one for £65 and not £400. Through you might want to look at it as I’m making one know as my boss won’t buy one for the painters :)
ya i put up the link for u. the guy i worked with before was just after spending big dollar on a 3m one and then i told him u could build one for peanuts! but ya i think the cheap one would be a great investment. i’m also gonna change all my bulbs for daylight coloured ones.
March 23, 2013 at 7:05 pm #42376cheers for the replies guys, i recleared the whole panel, and to say i’m happy is an understatement! after such a terrible finish before, this is a big improvement. changed to the 1.3 tip, used a slower hardener and layed on the clear a lot heavier

March 22, 2013 at 12:33 am #42315no wax, i didn’t think u were supposed to wax for a few months until all the solvents had been released?
I only used g3 cos it’s what i had at home. i’m gonna buy the new farecla premium range stuff. it looks great. from detailing world they retail at around £19, £20 and £10 gloss enhancer. i was in my local motor factor and they wanted 40 euro for one of them!March 22, 2013 at 12:10 am #42308got it finished anyway!
