Sorry It has taken me so long to respond. I do appreciate the help. It hasn’t been too bad this week but I’ve painted a lot of black cars. The biggest problem is still the side-tone on the silvers, it is always too dark, I’m still trying to get a Tekna gun to try out.
January 30, 2014 at 7:33 am #45810Thanks for your help. My colors are usually close to the color max cards not always exactly the same but close. I do shake the paint and run the mixing machine a couple times a day, like I always have. We do have the newest version for SmartTrack with the reminders.
The biggest problem I find is that the side tone on the light metallic colors is almost always too dark. The part I find the most frustrating is that all the silver tinters have a dark side tone to start with so it’s not easy to get rid of it. In the past I was always able to add more silver to a color that was too dark to make it lighter but with the 90 line that just doesn’t really work.
We do a lot of Hondas so NH700m and NH623m are a problem. Anything light blue or gold is also usually a problem. I did a Hyundai the other day, code E1 that was no were near any of the paint formulas. It wasn’t a new car but the formulas were way off.I’ve heard a lot of guys have had success with the new Tekna guns so I was going to get one to try out. What tip size would you recommend for it?
I’ve been using a Sata 3000 HVLP with a 1.4 tip. I’m wondering now if that is part of the problem. The guy who was painting before me was using a similar gun.I’ll check on some of the other code that have been a problem tomorrow.
January 29, 2014 at 8:20 am #45807Well, I thought it was going a little better but the last couple weeks thing have been really bad. It’s driving me crazy. Is anyone who does not work or have worked for BASF happy with the color matches with this stuff?
January 29, 2014 at 8:13 am #45806I was just reading your post and, I thought I was the only one in the whole world having problems with 90 line according to the reps. I can get the paint on Ok but it’s the color matches that are NEVER any good.
November 8, 2013 at 10:48 am #45342You guys have some nice shops. You all must live were land is cheap.
November 8, 2013 at 8:00 am #45339Thanks for all the info. I have tried a few things and am having a little better luck the last couple weeks.
I was wondering what guns you guys are using with this stuff. And what air pressure your using?
ThanksOctober 25, 2013 at 7:48 am #45091Thanks for the info. I do usually wait for the color to flash off completely before doing my drop coat. What technique do you use for your drop coat?
My bosses have no interest in switching paint companies so I’m just looking for a little info that might make my life easier. Thanks again

Have you heard a lot about the 90 line being crap? So far it’s not my favorite paint.
October 22, 2013 at 8:11 am #45053Sorry, I didn’t want to start a fight.
Do you use the colormax chip decks to compare the card to what you are painting? If the chips you are selecting match the parts you are painting you may be doing something incorrectly. The colormax 2/3 decks are sprayed in Glasurit water. I have 5 shops in my territory using 90 line and over 60 shops using Onyx. Its never been a problem in my region for color matching. Give me some details about your conditions ie; temp humidity levels, etc
We do use the colormax cards sometimes more of the cards match the car other times the cards don’t look to bad but once sprayed the color does not match the cards or the car. The temp in the booth is usually around 70. Not sure about exact numbers for humidity but the area I Live it’s usually not high or low.
What PSI do you recommend using? I’m using a Sata 3000 HVLP.
I’m going to be looking at the accuracy of my scale next.
October 19, 2013 at 10:43 am #45004Sorry to tell you, but there is not much you can do. The only way to fix the bumper is to sand off all of the paint job that someone put on the bumper. It looks like it was not properly prep or was damaged and the paint flaked off, or both. If the paint was damaged and that caused it to start flaking off you might not need to strip off all the paint but that is the kind of thing you can’t tell from pictures. The same goes for the spoiler. It needs to be sanded down, primed, and re-painted.
