Just a quick update in the space of one year went through 4 leads the fourth being an upgraded design and seamed to last better than the rest anyway at 3 months a time! Then speed buttons started to act up with only faster working so it has been sent back and replaced with a Mirka sander.
Turns out all the 3m sanders sold by my supplier gave same probs first couple to have speed button failure were sent for repair to 3m and had still not returned 3months later so they have replaced everyone’s with mirkas and told 3m to take all broken sanders back.November 24, 2014 at 12:30 am #47981Thanks for replies I actually ended up buying a DeBeer scheme and been very happy with it.
May 19, 2014 at 11:33 am #46667You could prob make your own get a piece of wooden dowel rod cut a slice down one end then slide your grey scotch into the slice fit the other end into a drill roll the scotch in opposite way that drill will turn and away you go. I used to port and polish heads using this and sandpaper back in the day lol.
The last set of rims I did like that belonged to my brother although he had centres blasted I then primed them and handed them back for him to rub before I painted them don’t think he’ll do another set lol.

April 28, 2014 at 2:55 am #46488After looking through the product list on site I was thinking some are same hs420 clear etc I wonder is the base the same as db 900+ or is it older 900?
They just bought the distributer over a month ago and must be pushing hard as the sales guy rang me to try sell system and I haven’t used them since last year they are pushing into new areas for customers and according to him they pretty much will not be beat on price as they buy massive quantities of products to keep price down will be interesting to see.April 25, 2014 at 11:52 am #46448
If it takes too long to feather out each chip and block it and your worried about being wavy strip it ;)
If it’s bad I just strip it as sanding can be slow, boring, messy and time consuming especially on some modern factory paints they just eat discs!
I usually be mindfull of edges and not getting it anywhere I don’t want it apply product then throw a plastic sheet over it to keep it wet and a lot of old paint sticks to sheet when you lift it of helping keep mess a little contained. On subject of paint stripper what do you guys use? I’m finding it harder to get a proper good quality product new laws are making it weaker and weaker.

April 15, 2014 at 12:14 pm #46385
We get a lot of UK painters coming here to work.
I know that you personally do great work Andy and I’m sure there are other great UK painters, but I haven’t had the best experiences with your compatriots that end up down under though……unfortunately while they claim they’re great painters, in reality they’re not up to the standards expected of decent quality shops in Australia.
Maybe they used to be good painters but the requirements of the shop (and customer expectations) they were working at in the UK might have been low/budget? Perhaps they weren’t able to do their best work due to the ‘type’ of work the shop took in?
Either way however, they don’t tend lift their game when they get here so I don’t know what’s going on? One painter at a shop I know told me they took in an Irish painter and he was shocking. Their apprentice was doing better work! The Irishman didn’t last long.
Most not all but most of the people I know and heard off heading over to you guys this past few years are are useless a**holes no matter what country there in lol and either work in very low end shops or never anywhere for long we’re happier some them are gone for awhile :hunt :dnc
Although we have lost some good labours, welders and friends to the sunnier climate.April 12, 2014 at 2:51 am #46367
I painted this Brembo alloy brake caliper (along with the other 3) back in December 2009. The calipers were fitted to my 500hp WRX STi that was driven HARD every day so the calipers got plenty hot, although it didn’t go to the race track with these particular calipers. What I can tell you is that they looked as good as the day I painted them when I sold the car back in late 2012, and having just seen the car a few weeks ago, they look no different today.
The process was:
Full cleaning and sanding 240grit dry
2 x coats of PPG D831 Universel Etch Primer
2 coats of PPG D839 ‘Prima’ wet on wet primer (W.O.W.)
3-4 coats of Deltron GRS D953 Coarse Lenticular Aluminium basecoat
4 light coats of DNA paints orange candy
2 x coats of PPG D8020 HS clear
Oven bake 30 mins at 65 deg C and let sit for 2-3 days
Sanded back with 500 grit dry
Logo masked off and STI sprayed on with 4 light coats of PPG Deltron GRS basecoat
3 x coats of PPG D8020 HS clear
Oven bake 30 mins at 65 deg C
Install and enjoy! So, even with all those coats, they still handled perfectly. I’ve done many other calipers (albeit with stickers for the lettering) and I have never had a customer return one because of paint/coating failure.
Nice! :cheers Thats some work you put into a set of calipers end result looks class thou :rock :clappy
