I will help anybody needing help with “Axalta” water.. Just seems everytime it always gets imto a debate over paint companies… Jmo…
Like I said before, they all work, just depends on the conditions & support you recieve.. I dont claim to know it all, But a lot of times I can get guys out of a tight spot because I’ve been there myself or know somebody that has..

    Sorry if this offends anybody…

I like to cut the corner off the old bumper, paint it real quick with the color I like then place back up on the car to check the color, before I paint the new cover…

Painterman, I wish I was in your area.. I would love to come hang with ya for a bit, just to show you some of the ways we do things around here, just sounds like were on totallly different pages…
I’m not joking when I say I have guys tell me they have never done tricoats as fast as we teach them..
And yes, the facts listed above are fairly true, the basecoat sands well for rerepair, but I usally over reduce my color 1 to 1 with blender when I have to get back into it or fix any blotching, then I use medium wet drop coats… I usally dont bake to dry the base, I just turn the heat up to 110 or 120 just to dry the humidity out of the panel and the booth, when I go back in after 5 to 10 minutes I dry any wet areas with a hand dryer…like I said above, painters with single stage experience adapt very quickly to this system, but I realize a lot of you younger guys may have never shot a centari job??

Well Jayson…. I’m not going to get into a pissing match about this… Just stating facts from my own personal experience, just as the thread asks…. Take it as you may

Nope, i worked in the same shop for 25 years, the last five were using Cromax Pro.. I left 2 1/2 years ago because they sold out to a certain MSO, since then I have worked for a Dupont “Axalta” Champion jobber as a tech, only there I can say that we have done product comparisons… Truth is they all work, they all have good & bad points, if there was a perfect system everyone would have it.. jmo
It really comes down to support imo, yes the paint companies are working on 3.5 solvent because there are tons of shops that are scared & just dont have the enviroment for water… But to my understanding, most change to water because of color match because that is whats being used at the oem level…
And lets face it, some if these new cars look totally horrible… imo

I’m comparing it to ppg as stated in the topic.. I switched over seven years ago, and at that time I’m not ashamed to say I didn’t know jack about water… So yes, it took a bit to master it were I felt as comfertable as solvent..
Dont know how they demo it out there, but here the car will pretty much be dry and ready for clear by the time I clean my gun and get the clear mixed up…

I aggree, axalta’s colors are there but finding them can be a challange at times… As far as speed, axalta’s water blows away the competiton… No doubt, it is a different animal, it sprays more like a single stage water that drys to a dull finish like base coat.. Definitly less fatige on the painter with it’s 1 1/2 coat coverage… That means you go around the car 1 time on a complete instead of 4 or 5… Honestly, took me 2 months to get totally comfortable when we switched….

I have heard of this before….

painterman, I’m sorry your having a bad time down there.. I do have alot of complaints about price increases here lately, but most all raw materials paint related come from the same sources, so most manufactures are going to have these same increases.. imo.. Your jobber should be able to work with you and find out where the weakness is as far as profitability?

Thanks Jim!! Lots of good info…

Hey guys, new the the board here… just recently made the switch from full time painter, to jobber paint tech/trouble shooter…. I will say, I have used Cromax Pro fro the last 7 years.. It has came a long way since my introduction to the system..
Most of the trouble shooting & quirks & remedies I pretty much figured out on my own, most of the Dupont staff are up to speed and doing very well with the product now!! I painted in the same shop for 25 years, I left the shop 2 1/2 years ago when they sold to a major MSO, everything I had heard on this particular MSO was not good.. So, it was time for a change..
I now work for a Axalta “dupont” Champions Jobber, it is hard because the market is so cut throat.. My personal opinion is, all the water systems work out there.. some maybe better then others, but it comes down to support & price & what you feel comfortable with… Cromax is like no other out there with the great coverage & wet bed blending… But, with this also comes a whole new learning curve.. IMO
It really reminds me of the old days of spraying single stage metallics, but with out the sticky…
I dont claim top know everything, but if there’s anything I can do to help anyone with any of Axaltas water lines please feel free to ask.. or, maybe a few of you could share some useful facts with me?? Plus please… I’m always open to learning new tricks and technique’s from out in the field…
I really urge any of you who haven’t tried it & are considering water to set up a few day demo from your local jobber…
