Modern hs and uhs clearcoats dont need several coats really mate and i imagine show cars get more coats so they can be colour sanded and buffed so that the finish looks flatter, even then 3 good coats is plenty imo.
The old gti devilbiss is a great gun Mate i just have a bit of trouble with some metalics and probably need to work on my technique.

Do you full time sprayers spray 2 wet coats or 1.5 ? Or does it depend on job and type of clear used ?
Depends on the job and product really. And of course the painter.
For a quick bumper cover job with a HS or UHS clear a light dust (grip) coat followed immediately with a full wet one should do. For more normal jobs I prefer two coats. First one thinner and faster but put enough on to make sure it’s a closed coat, then I go wetter on the second.
Yea i only do 1.5 coats on small jobs like bumpers but larger jobs i was getting mixed results mate so put 2 wet oats so theres a bit more to play with for polishing, just thought that may be one of my problems piling too much on when not really needed if i can get better finish with less clear used.i appreciate all your tips and hints folks thanks.
I use my supernova for base, but if its anything like the lph400 for clear, i run with wide open fluid, full fan and 2 inches from panel 75% overlap.
Wow 2 inches from substrate for clear ! What settings do you use with the supernova for base mate and is it Solvent or water based.i will take all tips and try to improve my technique it also feels good when i can see results and know i can paint a little, lol.
Thanks again folks, maybe thats the key then to move even quicker.mine is open wide at around 3.5 to 3.75 turns out so i only knocked it back about half a turn.i shall try it monday but really chuffed at the change in finish already, can only get better.
Do you full time sprayers spray 2 wet coats or 1.5 ? Or does it depend on job and type of clear used ?I know what you mean mate,i would rather be busy as the day goes quicker.at our place i have to take the job from start to finish and i love that as it keeps your skills up on all fronts, ive no doubt if i just painted all day i would be pretty good at it as you need to paint all the time to improve.i did a shift system when i did my apprentice at my dads garrage in early nineties,i loved the 6 till 2 in summer but not the 2 till 10 lol.hope it works out for ya mate, carl.
Its the other way round with our shop,my gaffers are sound as fcuk and i can have a joke with them and tell them to sod off and more ! But the flip side of things is its very busy and small, also not the cleanest of places but the moneys good so cant have it all eh ?
Hi jason just wanted to thankyou for your time and valuable imput, cant believe the difference i have got in my clearcoating with the sata by just getting in closer and wide open fluid at a bit more pressure, painted 2 silver cars today, the whole side of a mercedes and all the rear end of a ford focus and wow looks like factory finish with few polishing bits needed.i tried a bit less pressure on the second job around 2.1 bar and turned paint in a touch so almost 3 turns out from off and job looks amazing ! Cant thankyou enough as was gonna sell the sata !!!!!!! I know crazy, lol.
Congrats mate,im new on here but i did read your post about when you lost ya job,i empathised with you as sometimes its hard to work in a shop where you have to do things the way the gaffer wants them done and do things you wouldnt want to do but hey ho you just have bite your tongue and get on with it.
Sounds like a very busy shop who do you work for ? Will you be painting all the time or shop foreman type thing ?You know, i thought about that today and came to think its more of a over lap surely !oh well i did more overlap anways.
On another note mate,i had 2 cars to paint today so had to use an old devilbiss gti ( not the pro ) for basecoat on one of them for quickness, and the siver on the one i did with that gun was a bit blotchy.i normaly set up gun at 2 bar and about 6 inches away and mostly they are fine but some do go blotchy and i have to play around to lose it.should i spray at say 1.7 bar with this gun and less overlap with silvers ? I use mipa solvent basecoat and the gun is 1.4 but it is a good clean gun even tho its about 10 years old, lol.
Hi jason i tried the 4 inches away and fast with less overlap on a trunk (bootlid) 2 x quarter panels( rear wings) and rear bumper today with the sata 3000 and a vast improvement to be honest, run at 2.2 bar about 30 to 32 psi,was a bit scarey at first but nice finish way less texture, bit on the trunk but not bad at all, will keep at it and hopefully get better with those settings.was way quicker too, thanks for the advice mate, carl.
Thats great info jayson as i like to move quick just cant seem to get consistant results on the larger jobs,i didnt think about getting closer as thought it would be worse but will try it.ive been using a 50% overlap too so seems like i have over done it and that has caused the texture too,the problem in our place is its rush rush rush so i forget sometimes the little things i want to try out,i should write it down really the settings and techniques used and compare results.thanks again folks.
