Thanks for all the input. I still have some questions so I’m going to see a HOK tech expert today. I’ll pass on what I find out. PS I see people say they run KK in DBC500 I always ran it in clear. So see there are many ways people may be doing it. I just wanna find out what HOK says to do. I’m sorry if people feel I speek without knowing I thought this was a place to bounce ideas and knowledge around to build with each other. Just think I could be doing it better. If my info is wrong I wanna correct it. I love painting and that’s why I ask questions or comment on things not to act like I know it all.
March 30, 2013 at 3:20 am #42509HOK class in 2006. Color fade was discused. My memory is bad but there was a number of measurement of UV in KK and UK. In the UK was a like a 7.3 and the KK was around 3. But if you run your KK in a high UV clear I would think it would have a higher number. I know the basecoats have no UV anything in them. Maybe it’s diff becuase candy has a hardner. Is the UV in the hardner like for UK? How about clear is UV in the clear or the hardner? I’m am not 100% on my info but I have some new questions to check out.
March 29, 2013 at 10:11 pm #42498The bases can shift a color big time. Also brandywine can be confused with the apple red if its over a light enough base. As far as fading I’m in Florida so fade is a big issue however I would always suggest HOK UFC35 clear the uv protection is very high. It was formulated specialy for candy and the fade problems of candy. With HOK KK and UK are very different. KK is concentrate ment for underhood, jambs, out of direct sunlight areas and it fades faster then UK. I’ve seen people us KK without even knowing and it’s not good. But even if you don’t use HOK candy I would still use HOK clear.
March 29, 2013 at 3:11 am #42473What about having it scanned with a profit camera or what ever color scanning system your jobber uses? If it is sometimes availble in 2stage it might scan.
March 29, 2013 at 3:04 am #42472Welcome. Good luck to your daughter. As a female also I love to see more women making a go of it in this biz! She should join also. With all the people here from all over the world somebody always has input on something that will pertain to you.
March 25, 2013 at 4:13 pm #42414I find even with a gauge diff viscosities and diff applications need diff pressures. So sound and spray pattern test are for me most important. Diff strokes 4 diff folks lol
March 25, 2013 at 3:56 pm #42413I agree with the boys 7.5 is the biggest you will get for 240 power. I like the emergency pull secoundary fuse set up. I think another important feature is the cast iron head. I had an aluminum head once on the craftsman professional compressor. Definately not for a professional. But sears did replace 3 times with some amount of aggrivation. Warrantee is important. What is covered, who does the shipping, are you where a technician can come for service, does the company get an amount of tries to repair befor replace and so on. It sucks when you get these answers when you are down! Time is money. Good luck
March 18, 2013 at 12:52 am #42163I had a similar problem fish eyes on roofs and hoods, but not or little on the sides. I finally realized that super fine water droplets were coming out of my connection at gun at the hose. So any panals I would lean over to paint would fish eye cause the droplets drop down. On the sides not as bad because droplets down went on the floor. I drain everything before I paint but our air lines are so old I can only do so much. So I tape a small piece of clean rag around were my gun conects and no more fish eye. I know this is not the “proper” way but it got me through till my begging and pleading got me a new moisture trap in my big booth.
March 17, 2013 at 1:51 am #42143I use the sata 3000 hvlp 1.4 (I have the 1.3 set up also) for solvent base and clear. It was my only gun for 6 years. I sprayed base, candy, pearl, clear, and big flake everything with it. No digital gauge I don’t use a gauge. I go by sound. I just assume digital would need maintenence and batteries so I opted out. Great gun to bad they don’t make it any more. I’ll probably get a 4000 this year.
March 13, 2013 at 6:28 am #42091I’ve set up a few shops here in South Florida alot of the decissons to be made do depend on where you are. Paint: What jobbers do you have near by that could supply you? What brands do they carry? What paints are exceptable were you are? What are you gonig to need now and in the future? WB or solvent, BC/CC, SS, tinted primer/sealers. Shop: Before you sign a lease or deed you have to check with county and city laws, zoning, and permitting. Don’t assume that a previous mechanic shop can be licensed for paint. What kinda power will your compressor require? If it’s gona be 3phase try and find a shop with it already in. It’s very expensive to run 3phase into your building and you are limited to compressor size if you don’t have 3phase. If there is a septic system it will need to be tested, another fee. Booth: Size, type, and style all need to fit your needs. Are you doing cars now but invisions semi trucks in your future? Do you need it heated? Is it far enough room from the roof for fire codes? How many fire sepression tanks will you need for booth size? Will your stack go straight up or out and up? Bent stacks need more nozzles for the sepression system, more cost. Sorry to ramble on but all of these questions hit me at one time or another. If I would have known some of the questions to ask I could have saved alot of time. Hope this helps you.
March 10, 2013 at 7:08 pm #42015With stripes I lay the sripe color, tape stripes off, spray the rest of the overall color, peel stripe masking and clear. For nice show smooth look wet sand and clear again. I don’t like any hard edge indication so I charge for 2-3 rounds of clear.
March 8, 2013 at 6:21 am #41961I’ve used a 1.4 for 6 years, I like it. Are u using WB? I us solvent base. I don’t know anything about WB or how to spray it but for solvent base a 1.3 seems like you’d get slowed down.
March 7, 2013 at 6:57 am #41921That is so cool. I had a car flat black wrapped for a customer ($1400.)it wasn’t that good. But also semi perm. I can nice side work potential especialy here in south florida. Pls keep us informed on how it holds up etc.
March 6, 2013 at 3:57 pm #41889Can’t wait to see pics and hear applicaton comments. What type vehicle? How many coats? How much material did you use? Easy clean up? What did the total job cost you? (time and materials) I’m trying to get my bosses son to try it out. Sorry for the 21 questions just need to figure out numbers so I can pitch for someone to pay for my trial run.
