I’d suggest you get in as a prepper. In my shop preppers take rough bodywork and get it ready for paint. Block, prime, putty, tapeing etc. But let them know your goal is to paint. Most shops already have a painter so you have to earn your stripes first. But always remind them you wanna paint. If you are on break watch the painter show you are ready and eager to learn. Go to all the jobber classes. Ask If you can edge out pannels for the body men. Take lots of pictures of anything you paint. And last ask others if you have questions and always look up the advice for yourself to ensure that you stay on the right path. Good luck. I think painting is the best part!!!!!!!!!!!
March 3, 2013 at 7:48 pm #41785I know not to do these things but I am not in a good situation. I struggle in a terrible shop. I tell myself I will not be that kind of painter. Then life happens and the bills must be paid. So sometimes you just do what they say knowing whats going to happen just to keep a job.
And I will charge them again for redo.March 3, 2013 at 7:22 am #41771I did 2:1. mtk is 4:1 but boss said use twice as much hardner I think because it was cold. 60 degrees. He has me to do the stupidist things I’ve never seen any shop like this. Really bad but it’s a job
February 22, 2013 at 5:00 pm #41565I feel your pain. I am constantly being yelled at for amount of production I turn out. I am in the worst shop you could imagine. No supplies, dirty air, dirty booths, crap a– bodymen, no preppers all which holds me up. Sometimes though bosses just wanna hear open ended responses not no. Sorry you lost your job, but everything happens for a reason. Your perfect job could be around the corner. I understand the anger to give your all and all you get back is “how can you do more?”. The way this industry is going everyone is evaluating and tightning up the purse strings. The numbers after your gone should show then what you contributed to the biz.
February 22, 2013 at 6:29 am #41560When I was painting at a rim shop one of the guys used “vinyl paint”. I dont know the brand but he had trouble with it. I think cause he was useing a 1.4 and the coats were to thin and not enough. In the videos it looks like it is sprayed out in a heavier coat. At least after the inital thinner coats. I’m going to try a 1.4 or 1.7. Let you know…….
