Looking good Tommy.

I really love that 414 clear, but it’s a bit on the expensive side for me. Should give you a great finish though.

What poly have you used? Reface?
hey mate hows it going?

the poly was lesonal i gave it 2 coats and also a coat of lesonal epoxy under that !

should be a good base now!

this may seem to much datail but i have copied it from other forums i am on (ie what poly dose etc…..may benifit some neewbees)

    Small update !!!

well after a long time blocksanding the car

we have the first stage of many primer coats

this coat is polyester spray filler basicly a thin coat of body filler to fill any corse sanding scratches /pin holes etc
2 coats were applied wet on wet then given a dust coat of black is used as a guide coat for blocking the panels with a finer grit of paper

    hey,

i had the same problems with my iwata ws400 and ppg dbc

just get a test panel and run reccomended pressure at gun pull the fan in a little tad and play about with the fluid

the fluid supply is were your going wrong … if its to wet it will go rashy looking and stripes …. keep turning it down till its med wet…not wet

some may not agree but this was my first iwata and thats how i cured my same probs

AND THEN I COMPLEATLY SOLVED IT BY MOVING BACK TO SATA :p

… got offered a rental of a £29000 booth just installed i thought great we will go for that

    BAD IDEA …
hey fellas, i now this is a old post but im a newbie so just thought id share a bit of info too.

when i worked at my old place they had 2 new booths installed, costing the governor £100,000 for the pair all in all, and the first 10 jobs or so were filthy with rubbish in the paint. and the first job alone was completely smothered from tip to tip with grit and all sorts. but once the new set-up had settled in and cleared all the airways everything was fine so that might explain the crud in your first job tommy 😉

and just a quick thank you to andy t and tommy for all the extra info discussed. very useful. and i definitely agree with the ‘familiarity is key’ comment andy ;)
thanks for your input buddy !!!

    Welcome to the site too!

i usually open the lid and sit it on the heater/rad for a good 20mins works great !

Now most tds say spray at 22 deg booth temp dep on hardner but what about the actual product ? dose that have to be at a similar temp ? any tec sheet tell you that ?

    January 15, 2011 at 12:03 am #27172

20-25 deg ! but look a tds sheet for your clear coat that will tell you all you need to know— tip size —temp—hardner—thinners etc

im in uk too mate were you based ?

    January 5, 2011 at 12:53 am #26827

    thanks for the input guys!!

the car is just full of small ripples and basicly wanting all the door /wing/qtrs all the same hight so its like one continious panel

as for the colour is lexus red 3 stage paint ….cream engine bay …. cream interior etc

its going to be a show car/daily driver … i like my cars looking good lol

    some new pics from today

qtr replaced metal and first skim of filler

on this bit the metal had been streatched by what looked like reversing along a fence so hammer and dolly out we got the matal back to shape …after that the metal was high at 2 points so we applied heat till red hot the rapidly cooled with water to shrink the metal and get rid of the tin can effect ….worked real well

    skimed up

also shaved the holes for the badges and ariel too plates weded in

    welded

    skim of filler

    blocked down level

after that we skimed the full panel for perfection

Filler cap had little surface rust too , so we sand blasted it …. results

filler to smooth of the pits from the sand dents filled to

    looks like this

after that we got a hammer and dolly and worked the door-qtr panel lines/levels

    before

    after

also sand blasted front wing to find small inperfections and only surface rust due to poor job before

    skim of filler

    blocked

final skim bridged onto the door so its all level

next is to final skim the repairs and the door/wing/qtr gaps/levels also have to do the same to the filler so everything looks like its one panel nothing sticks out or sits in

then whole car in poly primer

    more to come soon

    January 5, 2011 at 12:18 am #26826

the car is in the restoration section !!

its realy not to bad itself few bits of rust i have fully cut out and welded in fresh metal

BEN …. as for what i am doing i and just leaving the std finish on the car and blocking it flat with 80 on a long block then 120 then i was going to poly the full car so i can block over …doors-qtrs + doors to wings etc so they all look level and straight

the poly i can get can go over std sound finishes keyed with 120g (lesonal brand by sickens )

apply poly then let sit over night block with 80 -120- 180- then 2k prime

i know it sounds alot of work but its not realy …. iam using 3m paper aswell and it cuts so good and on the long block so defo wont take long

    how dose that sound?

    January 4, 2011 at 1:10 am #26792

so what are you recomending do the dent repairs ….. block the panels then spray poly ….block again then prime ?

    January 2, 2011 at 10:57 pm #26756

    Thanks guys !!!

    Heres the plan

skim all panels with rage filler

block with large block and 80g paper ….guide coat and block till removed

re guide and re block with 80g till guide is removed

skim with rage finishing glaze (stopper)

knock down with 80 ..re guide and sand with 120 ..re guide block with 180

prime with 3 coats of 2k primer let sit over night

guide coat and block primer with 240g re guide then block with 320g

apply another 3 coats of 2k primer let sit over night

re guide and block with 320 re guide block with 500 re guide block with 800

    job done

how dose this sound ?? did i miss anything any recomendations welcome
