Anyone??

    April 20, 2013 at 8:55 pm #42860

Thanks Bob! Does this epoxy primer work well over body filler ? He has quite a bit of bodywork to do so I imagine he will have body filler on it and still have to drive it. What he ended up doing temporarily was getting some cheap spray can Rust Oleum enamel primer and paint. He put like 3 coats of primer and 3-4 coats of paint and it seems to have held up well until he can do some more work on it. I appreciate everyones help. Where I live your happy if you just don’t have any rust on your vehicle!
epoxy primer is the way to go. its the only totally waterproof primer. epoxy seals everything out. moisture slowly works its way through etch and 2k urethanes. you also gotta get all that enamel tractor paint off that thing. your going to run into trouble mixing that stuff with automotive paint.
Jim you think an enamel tractor and truck paint may give him problems? I just assumed since it was an enamel paint it would be ok. I also assume he already has an enamel paint on it from the factory. But……… I don’t know what paints can be painted over others and such. It’s a 2000 Dodge Dakota I believe. Thanks again! Jack :rock

Bobwires, If I’m understanding you correctly you use multiple air tanks to reduce the amount of water in your system? Can you explain exactly what you mean? Sounds interesting and something I might want to do. As for the lighting, I agree 100%!! You need really good lighting all around the vehicle!!!!!!! THanks! Jack

Thanks Ben, I’ve been following this thread also. I’m possibly looking to buy a better basecoat gun. Right now I just have the $140 Devilbiss HVLP Finish Line gun.

Yes Rat Stang, very well said! I’ve had people ask me questions concerning autobody and I usually end up saying,” Well, it depends” I never gave it much thought until you commented about how every scenerio in autobody is different. Like you said, auto mechanics is pretty much step by step. Thanks, Jack :rock

Thanks Ryan. I thought 6-8 sounded pretty low. I just adjusted the regulator at the gun to 10psi. What really sucked was the fact that I pretty much had to paint it being that we aren’t probably going to have any more days around 70 up here in Pennsylvania. It was only like 58 when I painted it yesterday. I know what I have to do next time! Get a test panel and adjust my gun, psi, etc. just to see what kind of atomization I can get. You guys are so knowledgeable!! Thanks as always! Jack :rock

Yes Ben it is the unhardened basecoat. And yes I am using the Martin Senour solvent. And yes it is reduced. The guy at the paint store gave me a gallon paint can to mix my paint together, so it’s reduced in a sealed gallon can.

Thanks for the quick reply Ben! They just said on the radio it’s supposed to be 65 ouut today, lol. I may say a prayer and hope for the best. I honestly don’t really know what to do. I know my days of decent weather are getting more limited by the day. If I decide to spray it today, do you have any advice? longer flash times possibly? Of course this doesn’t have to be a show truck, just decent looking with hopefully decent coverage and minimum to no runs! Of course I would never blame anyone for their advice being that I don’t have the most desirable conditions, experience, etc. So, if you have any suggestions please let me know. Thanks as always! Jack

Thanks all! Just hoping for one last nice day out so I can paint and clear. I have almost 35 hours in this thing. The things I do for family! Living in Pennsylvania, it’s starting to get cold out. I’m just hoping for a 65-70 degree day with low humidity! I live outside of a small town of 5,000. With that said I wish their was a place around here where I could rent a paint booth for a day! I actually decided to just spray both sides of the truck rather than attempt to blend the paint. So, I will probably have about 40 hours of labor and $400 in materials when it’s all said and done. Getting a little nervous being I have never sprayed clearcoat before. I believe we are supposed to have a few days around 60 degrees coming up. Is that too cold to spray or do you think it would be ok? My reducers and hardeners are medium. Thanks as always! Jack :rock

What sucks is when I asked NAPA why their products don’t have any spray info. on them they said something about the company isn’t allowed to put that info. on the cans. They said you have to go to their website and look up the info. They also said their products are made for professionals. Maybe I should have said,” Well, I better go somewhere else then!” lol Thanks Ding!
