The car looks BEAUTIFUL!!!! i hope to see it in person one day around here! i stay in houston as well! just one question buddy, how did you set up your gun? i actually went out and bought the same harbor freight gun you have after seeing your videos! just wondering how you set up the fluid needle and fan along with the psi! thanks! once again, the buggy looks awesome! :rock
Thanks! Hopefully we’ll run into one another.

I set the fan to its widest setting. Fluid, 2 1/2 turns out. The psi at the hand was 40 – 45 psi. The psi may seem high, but these cheaper guns need more psi to atomize the paint like a more expensive gun would.

I haven’t got a whole lot done lately cause of life. I did manage to get the wipers on, starting masking the floor for coating, and my bro bought me some carpet for Christmas, which will go in soon.

I also got some pictures and video of the bug outside, finally. 🙂

Thanks for the compliments. It sure was quite a bit of work creating this one of a kind car. Took a lot of creative thinking as well. Boy am I glad it’s almost finished. :cheers

Thanks, everyone. :lol1 I know, the garage has become quite a mess doing this paint job. The floor used to be covered with paper. Now…it’s just a mess.

Hey guys, I finished painting my car and I had my buddy come and wet sand and polish. Came out real good.

Here is the car before he worked on it. Looks good / decent. I call it a 5 foot paint job. Shiny and smooth, but it had a couple runs, some dry spray and dust through out the paint job.

Here you can see the dry spray that was in a few areas.

Oh yeah, while I was changing some jets in my carb, my 3 month daughter decided to grab my tools. She normally doesn’t really grab and hold onto many things like she did this wrench. It was a proud moment.

Here’s Dave, hard at work. He arrived at the house at about 10 am and worked all day, until about 10 pm perfecting the paint / detail job. Fantastic!

Madison and my wife came to check out the progress and get in on the picture taking. They were having all the fun. Dave was wiping the car down with a protectant that still allows the paint to fully cure.

    Thanks again, Dave!
Hey everyone, I’m new to the forum. I’ve got a question, I’m currently doing my third level in car body repair and paint operations, I’m thinking of buying my own spray guns, mainly for use on my own car but my teachers keep telling me, if I buy a spray gun, that I need to go with Devilbiss or I’m wasting my money, but when I looked at the Devilbiss guns, they are WAY out of my price league. I saw a set of cheaper guns and I’m just wondering if it’s actually worth me buying them or not?
Hey there, Brian. I could see why he would recommend such a great tool, although pricy. I’m a newb at painting, but have learned that the paint and gun don’t make the painter or paint job. Granted, more expensive paint would last longer, but it’s really all in the prep work.

I’m currently doing my first paint job with a $40 Harbor Freight gun and inexpensive Summit Racing paint, and it’s turning out very well. Here’s a link to the hvlp I’m using. These cheap Chinese guns do require quite a bit more air though to atomize the paint like pro gun would. A Devilbiss would run @ 25 psi, but this HF gun requires 40-45 psi to get the job done.

    http://www.harborfreight.com/high-volume-low-pressure-gravity-feed-spray-gun-66222.html

Spraying away with the HF gun and the results.

These results are after spraying two coats of clear, wet sanding flat with 600 grit, and following up with an over reduced coat of clear.
Been watching and you don’t look like a first timer…..
😆 I’ve never touched a paint gun before this project. I tend to do well at most things I set my mind on, but I also do quite a bit of research before I dive into something like this. So I kinda school myself by reading books, reading online articles, join forums such as this, watched jimmo4life’s videos numerous times, and THEN I attempt it.

Don’t know what else to say. :cheers

Looks nice. Is it me, or is it a pain in the @$$ painting a car that’s shaped like a bubble? 😆

    October 26, 2010 at 1:00 am #24675

Thanks guys. I’ve always like bugs and muscle cars so I combined them. The only thing VW on this now is the body. Otherwise it’s a V8 S10. 😀
Slick…Harbor Freight Gun?
Thanks. Yup. Harbor Freights $35 hvlp gun, if really is an hvlp. It uses quite a bit of air.

I finished the deck lid and the hood. I sprayed a final flow coat after sanding with some 600 grit. It came out almost as nice looking as a cut and buffed paint job. I’m very happy with the results. A couple dust nibs here and there, but what can you expect in a garage. ;D

I also resprayed the fenders. I finally figured out what I was doing wrong that I was getting solvent pop, fish eye, or whatever its’ called. I was just hosing too much paint on. They came out much better. Heck, I could leave them as is, but I’m going to wet sand and do a flow coat.

Which box fans are you using? The $20 box fans from Lowes and Target flow 2,000 cfm. Might want to get you at least 4 of those. Place those at one end and some filters on the other so it’ll pull clean filtered air in and it’ll blow crap out.

I would test the booth with maybe some dried ice to see how well it vents. You don’t want your first paint booth to be your last. Change your filters on your mask often.

Turn your fans on before you spray and wait until all the fumes are gone until you turn them off to avoid igniting the fumes.

Personally, I just keep my garage door wide open and I use two box fans to blow fumes out. I don’t like the idea of being trapped with toxic fumes. I paint on nice days with very little wind. I made a screen / cover to keep bugs and dust out. IMHO, it’s not worth risking my health over dust and bugs. If you’re going to cut and buff, it doesn’t matter if there’s a little dust in the paint. It’ll sand out.
